What is a Banksman?
Banksman is person who controls and
guides every movement of traffic &
heavy earth moving equipments in a
construction work / activity.

Duties of Banksman:-
 Guide traffic in a proper route.
 Guide vehicles during reversing
operation.
 Guide operators through proper hand
signals for any excavation jobs.
 Give proper guidance to operators during
any work done by earth moving
equipments.

Duties of Banksman:-
 Guide operator for any under ground
Utility services.
 Guide operators during lifting or any
hazardous movements.
 Emergency response in case of if any
incident / accident.
 Reporting to the authority in case of if
any incident / accident.

How to response in case of any
incident or accident
 Immediate reporting of the incident to a
competent person (incident controller)
and warning neighbors. Segregation of
the area by diverting the traffic and
erecting barriers.

 Excluding all workers from the area,


except those authorized to deal with the
situation.

 Monitoring of the situation very carefully,
with out involving himself into any
danger.
 Waiting for a declaration of ‘All clear’ by
competent person before permitting
persons / traffic or equipment back to
work.

During lifting or hazardous
movements:–
 Nobody should be allowed adjacent
to the working areas or any
suspended load.

 The areas must be demarcated and


barricaded to prevent traffic
movements.

 Peoples to be warned in the
hazardous areas by means of hooter,
flag or by a whistle.

 Only recognized hand signals should


be used.

Other safety precautions
• Always watch the bucket - the operator is
watching you

• Make sure the bucket does not pass

above workers / passersby


• Keep the Equipment at least 6 m (20 feet)
away from power lines - keep an eye out
overhead.

• The designated Banksman must be
competent and know "all the right moves".
As well, the person must wear a reflective
vest.

• Lookout for faults of equipment such as
cracked windshields, loose battery
terminals or a leaking hydraulic line.

• Good housekeeping on and near the


Equipment area is essential for safety.

• Proper hand signals, a positive and alert

attitude, and a good eye for procedures

can lessen the risk of accidents or injuries

to co-workers .
Other safety precautions

• Be aware about the underground live services at

the time of excavation job.

• Keep watch the scanned drawing and marking of

the services (if any).

• In case of any incident, report immediately.
