When should the crane
operator follow hand signals?

A crane operator should always move

loads according to the established
code of signals, and use a signaler.
Hand signals are preferred and
commonly used.

What should you do when in charge
of signaling?
The signaler must
¾ be in clear view of the crane
operator
¾ have a clear view of the load and
the equipment,
¾ keep persons outside the crane's
operating area,

NEVER DIRECT A LOAD OVER

A PERSON.

When operations are required to be done with signals, a designated
signal person will be assigned to work with the Crane Operator.

Signals

Giving proper hand signals is a very important skill that the

Roustabout must know.
Before making any lift, all of the crew must agree to who will be
giving the signals to the Crane Operator.
The person giving the signals must keep in view of the Crane
Operator and the load being moved.
If visual contact is lost, then the job should be halted until the job
can proceed safely.
There must be only one person giving signals.

RAISE BOOM. LOWER BOOM.

Arm extended, fingers closed, thumb Arm extended, fingers closed, thumb
pointing upward. pointing downward.

HOIST. LOWER.
With forearm vertical, forefinger pointing With arm extended downward, forefinger
up, move hand in a small horizontal circle. pointing down, move hand in small

MOVE SLOWLY. SWING.

Use one hand to give any motion signals and Arm extended, point with finger in
