Life cycle:
“the series of changes that a product, process, activity, etc. goes through

The total phases through which an item passes from the time it is initially

What is a project life cycle?

“A collection of generally sequential project phases whose name and


number are determined by the needs of the organization or organizations
involved in the project.”

The project life cycle describes what you need to do to complete the
work.
What is a project life cycle?
A project life cycle is the sequence of phases that a project goes through
from its initiation to its closure.
The number and sequence of the cycle are determined by the
management and various other factors like needs of the organization
involved in the project, the nature of the project, and its area of
application.
The phases have a definite start, end, and control point and are
constrained by time.

Initiation
Any project starts from a creation of a formal document called the
project charter/business case.
• This document usually contains the following (El-Reedy, 2011):
• The name of the project
• The purpose of the project
• The business need for this project
• The rough time schedule is defined by the project time period
• The budget of the project
• The profit from the project using the payout method
• The project manager in any situation

Getting to the scope baseline


Feasibility Study
• The phase of the feasibility study is the second step after the
emergence of the idea of the owner.
• the selection of the team or the consultant office that will perform
this feasibility study is important.
• The phase of the feasibility study, also called the appraise phase, is
followed by the preliminary (FEED) study phase.
Feed (Preliminary) Engineering
• the second phase after the completion of the feasibility study for a project.
• it is one of the most important and most dangerous stages of engineering
and professionalism of the project since the success of the project as a
whole depends on the engineering study in this phase.
• the project the owner must prepare the Statement Of Requirement (SOR)
document during the preparation of engineering requirements.
• SOR contains all the owner information and needs concerning the project
and the objective of the project.
• The SOR also contains the technical information available
from the owner, such as the location of the land and its coordinates
system and its specifications.
Detail Engineering
• Delivering the full construction drawings and specifications for the
whole project that contain all the details that the contractor will
execute.
• It must involve good coordination between the different disciplines.
• The system of quality assurance in this stage is important.
• The drawings should be sent in a specified time to the client for
review and discussion
Decision Support Package (DSP)
• It comes after feasibility study and feed engineering phase.
• Usually put together by the project manager and the project team
and presented to senior management to provide green or red light.
• DSP is a compilation of key project information used to support
decision-making.
• the DSP must accurately support the team's recommendation with
particular emphasis on potential rewards and risks.
Decision Support Package (DSP)
Major components:
• Executive Summary which includes, Project overview, Business case,
Decision and Risk Analysis and Plan for Project and Next Steps.
• DSP Notification Document – summary of opportunities to be moved
forward and relevant documentation
• DSP Reference Document – contains all other reference materials
such as project schedule details, contract work scopes, etc.
Design Management
• Aims to control the design stage to provide high quality with a better
price.
• Instructions for controlling the design are often provided in the
contract.
• The designer must take into account the available materials in the
local market of the project country and its location, and they must
match with the capabilities of the owner.
• The designers must have a contact with and full knowledge of the
best equipment, machinery, and available materials.
• The design must be in conformity with the project specifications and
HSE regulations
Design Management

Execution Phase
• this stage involves both quality assurance and quality control.
• the contractor should have a strong, capable organization, capable of
good quality control, and documents that define the time and date in
which the work was carried out and who receives the materials.
• Changes can occur in the construction drawings and must be well
documented and monitored.
Commissioning and Startup
• When it happens depends on the nature and size of the project.
• In the case of housing projects, commissioning and start-up will be applied
to the building during the finishing activities of being completed in phases
as per each floor or by each stage of completion as receive the masonry
work, then plastering and painting, and so on.
• For industrial projects a new team will formulate consisting of members of
the projects and operating personnel who receive work and have the head
of the team.
• The team will have a specific target to start the operation where the
reception is not performed until after the primary operation
• This stage takes a period of time depending on the size of the project and
may extend to months
