Praxis Core Exam Results

Exam Requirements

According to UNLV, a student does not need to take and pass their Praxis Core test

before being admitted into the bachelor’s program for Education. UNLV does suggest that

students prepare and pass the Praxis Core before receiving a bachelor’s degree. The scores

needed to pass the Praxis Core exam are as follows: Reading- 156, Writing- 162, and Math- 150.

Because my emphasis is in English I would also have to be certified in the English-Praxis Core

exams and taking the English Language Arts: Content Knowledge with a qualifying score of 167

and Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12 with a qualifying score of 157 are

required.

Exam Preparation

Throughout the semester, I took Praxis Core practice tests online at Khan Academy. I

think I could have studied more. I did do some practice questions on ETS. Last semester, while

taking EDU 202, we were required to complete a module within EDU 220 that helped to prepare

us for taking the Praxis Core. I bought CBEST (Praxis Core equivalent) study books that I hope

will help with my studying in the future.

Exam Results

In Reading, I scored 29 multiple choice questions correct out of 56 and my percentage

was 52%, which means I need significant improvement before I can take my official Praxis Core

exam. In Writing, I scored 32 multiple choice questions correct out of 40 and my percentage was

80%, which means that I am likely to pass the Writing section when I take the official Praxis
3

Core exam. In Math, I scored 33 multiple choice questions correct out of 54 and my percentage

was 61%, which means I need improvement before I can take my official Praxis Core exam.

Future Exam Preparation

Based on my practice exam scores, I think in the near future I would like to work with a

tutor on Reading and Math. I think I did quite well on the Writing section, and so I am not too

worried about studying for that. As mentioned above, I did purchase a CBEST study book, and I

plan to study the questions out of that book. On Khan Academy, you are given the option to

work on goals within the practice Praxis Core, and Khan Academy is very detailed about what

you need to focus more on.
