Interviewing to Get the
Job
Rose Opengart, Ph.D.
Pre-Interview Essentials

• Two-minute pitch/Know yourself

• Email errors/professional communication

• Company research

• Industry research

• Interviewer research
Interview Essentials: Basics
• Think before you speak
• Consider the job’s requirements/sell yourself/don’t
underestimate yourself
• Put yourself in the shoes of the interviewer
• Ask about job before pay and benefits
• Get a feel for the culture and expectations
• Personality is important/be yourself
• Watch non-verbal behavior (yours & theirs) and nervous habits
Interview Essentials: How to answer
questions

• Look at the person asking the questions

• Respect everyone equally
• If you don’t understand a question, ask for it to be repeated
• Don’t give 1-word answers
• Don’t stress negative points
• Any concerns/objections – how will you handle them?

• What can YOU do for THEM?

Interview Essentials: Behavioral
interviewing
• Tell me about a time when you had to use your
presentation skills to influence someone's opinion

• Describe an example when you were faced with a

stressful situation that demonstrated your coping
skills

• Be prepared with examples

Interview Essentials: How to ask
questions
1. What type of people are successful here? What
type of people are not?
2. What would you like to be able to say about the
new hire one year from now?
3. How would you describe your management style?
4. What is the first problem that would need the
attention of the person you hire?
5. What's one thing that's key to this company's
success that somebody from outside the company
wouldn't know about?
Interview essentials: salary
discussion
• Try to postpone the discussion of salary until after you have an offer.

• You can make a statement such as, “I would like to have a full
understanding of the position and the full compensation package
before answering that question.”

• Another strategy is to give a range.

• Salary is not the only form of compensation that might be negotiated

Post-Interview Essentials
• Follow up:
• Stress interest/enthusiasm
• State major selling points
• Address any concerns
• How you can help solve their problems
• Consultant mentality

• The ball is in your court!

Remember,

Make sure you are addressing the

company’s problem – not your own!
