Economic Cycle - Solution

Each student can explain the economic cycle to someone in English and German;
Is able to accept the function of the cycle as a “living” structure rather than a immobile drawing;
Can explain to somebody what the consequences for our economy are, if the flow of money is altered
in the cycle.

Ausgangslage
Nachdem wir den Markt mir Angebot und Nachfrage bereits studiert haben, wollen wir nun die
Wirtschaft eines Landes als Gesamtes betrachten. Das gesamte Geld und die ganzen Güter fliessen
hier in unserem Wirtschaftskreislauf in gewaltigen Flüssen – wie das Wasser in der Limmat. Dabei
kann durch Staumauern Wasser aufgestaut oder umgeleitet werden. Ein anderes Bild für den
Wirtschaftskreislauf ist der Blutkreislauf in Ihrem Körper. Das Blut muss konstant fliessen, damit Sie
leben können. Wenn Sie Sich schneiden, fliesst das Blut aus dem Kreislauf und Sie könnten sterben!

Aufträge
1. You will be introduced to the economic cycle – a pretty simple, but important model to
understand, how money flows in our economy. Firstly you will see the following presentation
on the economic cycle in German “04_WK_Wirtschaftskreislauf_LM“. In a second step you
will draw your own economic cycle, step by step, guided by your teacher on your task sheet
“04_WK_Zeichenvorlage_LM”. The whole sequence will be in German.

2. Last week / last lesson you were introduced to the economic cycle and you had the chance to
draw a first economic cycle by yourself. Now it is time to transfer the economic cycle in
English and to enhance your knowledge about it. Use the following keywords to draw a new
economic cycle on the backside of your task sheet.

 Consumers  salary / profit

 Producers  land / labour / capital
 State  goods and services
 Banks  payment for goods and services
 Foreign countries  taxes / schools / streets / railways

3. As you now should know, you should think of the whole economic cycle as a huge river,
imbedded to the circulation of water of our planet, or the stream of blood, circulating

 endless through your body. What if we build a dam into our river or a blood vessel becomes
blocked? Our cycle will run dry!
Now try to think in your table group, what happens in the following cases your group will
present the results later to the class:

3.1. The State doubles all income taxes from consumers:

3.3. The Banks offer new savings accounts with 4.5% interest rate if you leave your money there
for at least two years.:

Der Lern- und Arbeitsauftrag ist erfüllt, wenn Sie den Wirtschaftskreislauf einem anderen Lernenden
oder ihren Eltern erklären können. Wichtig ist dabei, dass Sie verstanden haben, dass der Kreislauf
wie ein Lebewesen zu betrachten ist. Man kann die Wirtschaft mit verschiedenen Massnahmen
ankurbeln oder schwächen.
Sie haben für Sich eine gut lesbare Darstellung des Wirtschaftskreislaufes gezeichnet, welche Sie in
Ihren Unterlagen einordnen und für die Schlussprüfung aufbewahren.
