2 Grammar - Present perfect

Now study the information in the box and complete the dialogue on the next page, putting the verbs in
brackets into the present perfect.

We use the present perfect (I’ve started working as a tour guide) when we talk about a change that
happened between a time in the past and now. We don’t say when this change happened. When we
talk about a finished action in the past, and if we say when it happened, we use the past simple (I
visited Russia last year).
To form the present perfect, we use have/has + past participle.
The present perfect of work:

affirmative forms negative forms questions

5 Present perfect vs. Past simple

Think about your life last year and now. Look at the sentences below. If they are true for you, put ‘T’. If
they are false, correct them to make them true. Compare with a partner.
