ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

On behalf of the student office bearers of SoChem (Society of Chemical


Engineers), I take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to the Head of
Department as well as President of SoChem Prof. Vijay Laxmi Yadav for his
visionary guidance throughout the semester. We would also like to extend our
gratitude to Vice President (SoChem) Prof. R. S. Singh and Treasurer
Dr.Bhavana Verma and Dr. Ankur Verma for their constant support in
conducting Society’s activities without which this task would have been very
difficult.

Also, we would like to extend our vote of thanks to all the faculty members of
the department whose help and guidance was needed from time to time.
Lastly, we profoundly acknowledge all the students of the department who have in
any form contributed to SoChem throughout the semester. Without these supports,
these efforts could not have been materialized.

The Society of Chemical Engineers, IIT (BHU) Varanasi worked successfully in
the year 2019-20, ensuring good participation of the students of Department of
Chemical Engineering from our all years in various activities, competitions and
workshops. The student body of SoChem with the guidance from our faculty office
bearers put in its rigorous efforts to make the student fraternity of the department
realize the true fruits of a visionary society existent in the department since 1945.

A brief outline of SoChem’s activities for the year 2019-20 is given below:

DETAILED REPORT

➢ Freshers Orientation

The purpose of fresher’s orientation was to smoothen the transition of freshers into
SoChem. An orientation program was organised on 27th August 2019. students were
enlighted with the motive of Sochem and were sorted into four groups. This was the
first-ever gathering for them, and this helped them to get familiar with the society and
get introduced to some seniors so that they could gain valuable advice from them.
Finally ending with the registration process, they officially became a lifelong member
of this caring family.
➢ Case Study workshops and competition

Case study competition was conducted on the 17th of October after the workshops
where the 1st and 2nd-year students were made aware of the essential points to focus
while presenting the idea and problem-solving. The competition was conducted at two
stages, and first stage teams were shortlisted based on their concept and abstract. The
second round was conducted at LT7 of Chemical department where the participants
with their respective teams presented the idea and learned from each other’s
suggestions and questions.
➢ Diwali celebration

SoChem family celebrated Diwali in their way. It was an evening full of laughter,
music, poetry, joy, and smiles. We believe in doing things together and therefore, all
the students of the SoChem family from 1st to 4th year came together to celebrate
Diwali. There were wonderful performances put up by the freshers. While some let
their voices out with poetry, some did it with music. There were dance performances,
stand-ups, Rangoli making competitions, lantern-flying, and photographs. The case
study winners were awarded at the end. competitions, lantern-flying, and

➢ Off campus internship counselling session

4th-year seniors of Chemical conducted a successful Off-Campus Counselling


Session for 3rd year B. Tech and 1st year M. Tech students on 9th January, and there
couldn't have been a better way to start a new year. The session focused on the
opportunities available for the 3rd year B. Tech and 1st year M. Tech students for
summer internships. They covered the frequently asked questions by the applicants
embodying: "How to apply", "Where to apply", "What all should they prepare", etc.
It was a great session as everyone felt motivated, and the path before them for
choosing future prospects was clear.
➢ Kite flying and Makar Sankranti celebrations

To exhilarate from studies and classes going on, SoChem organized kite flying.
Celebrations on the 12th of January, 2020. Students from all years of the Department
of Chemical Engineering were invited in this get-together. Kites and threads were
arranged by the team. Also, sweets distribution took place to signify the festival of
Makar Sankranti. This celebration increased the feeling of affection among the
Chemical family.
➢ Holi Celebrations

With the motive of refreshing our minds after the Mid-sems the Holi Celebration was
organised on 3rd March at the Agri ground after the classes. The first-year students
were specially invited for this celebration and colours and refreshment was arranged
by team. All had a great time together. This celebration increased the feeling of
affection among the Chemical family.
➢ Resume Making Workshop

This workshop was organized on 25 January to give students an idea of ‘how to make
a resume’. Seniors gave insights as to how we could create an effective resume and
transform it into a powerful tool to stand out in an interview.

➢ GD sessions

● PART I

The students of part I and part II were introduced with the basics of GD. Experienced
3rd-year students gave them valuable tips to students on how to perform an effective
and impactful GD

● PART II

The second GD session was held on 27 January 2019 in LT 3 and 4 for the students of
part I and part II. The senior experienced students explained how to study a problem
statement and the critical points for group discussions. A group of 10 students, along
with 2-3 senior student mentors, were formed to carry out the group discussion.
Finally, all the students were made aware of the flaws as observed by the mentors.
Sports Activities
SoChem believes in the overall development of an individual. Keeping
this in attention sports activities were included in Osmoze for all the years.
Teams were formed by the sports coordinators and the schedule was made
accordingly. This were held on
their respective grounds whereas indoor games were held in hostels.

The Chemical Engineering Fiesta

Osmoze is an amalgamation of Wisdom, Competition, and Celebration


of Chemical Engineering. With the motto of Sharing Sapience
Crossing Channels, Osmoze is one of India's biggest festivals
organized exclusively for Chemical Engineering Students. Osmoze ’20
hosted by the Department of Chemical engineering experienced
numerous participations from IIT BHU and many others colleges across
the country. It included events of all nature to ensure the overall
development of individual. Events including case study, coding events,
problem solving were a part of the fest. Also, informal events such as
general knowledge-based crosswords were included.

Detailed report of Events

Pre-Events: -
➢ Osmocross
Osmocross is an online crossword puzzle solving competition- a pre-event of
Osmoze. A challenge was circulated every Friday around 9 PM since 27 March
2020 for three weeks, through mail and given one-hour time to solve. Winner was
decided by maximum number of correct words in minimum time. Each challenge
was based on a different theme. The themes used were:

· TV Series

· World of Sports

· Varanasi
Winners of each challenge were given prizes at the completion of Osmoze.
➢ Osmo-Click
It's an online contest where participant are required to send photos of any
events/activities in daily lives which resemble any chemical phenomenon and
provide a proper explanation for the same. Judgement was based on creativity and

likes and shares on the post.


Prizes for this event is 1500 INR
Events: -

➢ Chemathon
Chemathon is the virtual internship and placement event of Osmoze and it aimed
to give an upper edge to face the real-life upcoming challenges. Chemathon
brought a platform to test proficiency across a multitude of facets.

The event consisted of 2 rounds:


1. General Aptitude Test of 1 hour. After this, candidates were shortlisted for the
second round.
2. Personal Interview
The winners were awarded with cash prizes

➢ Chem-coding

Chem-Coding is a competitive programming event that tests our problem solving


and programming skills. We were given a series of algorithmic puzzles and
problems with difficulty level up to code forces Div2. It was held on 3rd of April
from 6 P.M. and 8 P.M. and hosted on Hacker rank platform. It was open only for
the Chemical Engineering students of the institute.
Prize: 5000 INR
➢ Adhyayan

Adhyayan is a management event dedicated to the adroitness of case study.


Involving solutions that entail stipulating the organizations objectives, burgeoning
policies and simultaneously outlining plans to achieve them. Prize money for this
event is 8000 INR.

➢ Udyog

Udyog tests understanding of technical knowledge and creativity. Students had to


come up with an economically feasible solution to a challenging industrial
company problem.

Team selection for 2020-21
Interviews for the SoChem and Osmoze team 2019-20 were held in the month of
April. Based on these and the work done in 2018-19, team members were
selected by the senior students.
