Recommended Equipment:

Setup and Operation
➀ Mount the Motor/Generator Apparatus onto the
edge of a table or other horizontal surface.
➁ Insert the banana plugs from the Motor/Generator
Apparatus into the PASCO Power Amplifier signal
output jacks.
➤ WARNING: Do not connect the output of
the Power Amplifier to the output jacks (red and
black banana jacks) on the Motor/Generator
Apparatus. This would burn up the load resistor.
➂ To use the motor to lift a mass, fasten a string
through the hole in the horizontal shaft near the
pulley. Attach a mass at the other end of the string.
If you are using the Power Amplifier, set the DC
output voltage using the software that came with
the computer interface. To turn the motor on, flip
the switch on the Motor/Generator to the UP posi-
tion.
➃ To use the apparatus as a generator, wind the string
up on the horizontal shaft so the mass is in position
to be dropped. To monitor the voltage output, con-
nect the banana plug ends of a Voltage Sensor (CI-
6503) into the connectors near the ON/OFF switch
on the Motor/Generator. Flip the switch on the Mo-
tor/Generator to the DOWN position. The mass will
fall if the weight is sufficient to overcome the fric-
tion in the motor.
➄ The vertical post at the end of the horizontal shaft is
for mounting a photogate across the pulley so the
pulley can be used as a Smart Pulley. Use a
photogate to measure the velocity of the ascent and
descent of the mass.
➤ NOTE: The linear speed of the mass depends
on the circumference of the horizontal shaft to
which the string is attached. Use calipers to
measure the shaft diameter exactly. However, the
shaft diameter is approximately 0.25" or 0.635
cm. Therefore, the circumference is 1.994 cm, so
each interruption of a photogate across the pulley
= 0.1994 cm.

Experiments
Experiments for the Motor/Generator Apparatus are
described in the Series 6500 Getting Started and
Experiment Guide manual and are included on the
Experiment Guide disks that come with the CI-6550
and CI-6565.
Limited Warranty
PASCO scientific warrants this product to be free from
defects in materials and workmanship for a period of
one year from the date of shipment to the customer.
PASCO will repair or replace, at its option, any part of
the product which is deemed to be defective in mate-
rial or workmanship. This warranty does not cover
damage to the product caused by abuse or improper
use. Determination of whether a product failure is the
result of a manufacturing defect or improper use by the
customer shall be made solely by PASCO scientific.
Responsibility for the return of equipment for warranty
repair belongs to the customer. Equipment must be
properly packed to prevent damage and shipped
postage or freight prepaid. (Damage caused by im-
proper packing of the equipment for return shipment
will not be covered by the warranty.) Shipping costs
for returning the equipment, after repair, will be paid
by PASCO scientific.
Equipment Return
Should this product have to be returned to PASCO
scientific, for whatever reason, notify PASCO scien-
tific by letter or phone BEFORE returning the product.
Upon notification, the return authorization and ship-
ping instructions will be promptly issued.
➤ NOTE: NO EQUIPMENT WILL BE
ACCEPTED FOR RETURN WITHOUT AN
AUTHORIZATION.
When returning equipment for repair, the units must be
packed properly. Carriers will not accept responsibility
for damage caused by improper packing. To be certain
the unit will not be damaged in shipment, observe the
following rules:
➀ The carton must be strong enough for the item
shipped.
➁ Make certain there is at least two inches of packing
material between any point on the apparatus and the
inside walls of the carton.
