Longitudinal expansion apparatus D (381 341)

1 Description 2 Scope of delivery

The longitudinal expansion apparatus D can be used to dem- 1 base plate with scale and holder for tubes
onstrate the longitudinal expansion of solid bodies (tubes) 1 pointer, screwable
subjected to heat and to determine the coefficient of linear
1 scale
expansion α of brass, steel, and glass.
1 steel tube (309 07 786)
The tubes are heated from room temperature up to approx.
100°C by a flow of warm water or water vapour through the 1 brass tube (309 07 785)
tubes. Their change in length is displayed with 75-fold magnifi- 1 glass tube (686 49)
cation through the transmission ratio of a pointer so that it is
easy to observe and can be read from a scale. Alternatively,
the scale and the pointer can be replaced by a dial gauge
(361 15). 3 Technical data
Measuring range for
linear expansion: 1 mm
Accuracy of reading 0.05 mm
Brass tube α = 18 ⋅ 10−6 K −1

Steel tube α = 11⋅ 10−6 K−1

Glass tube α = 3 ⋅ 10−6 K −1

Effective tube length: 200, 400, 600 mm
Tube diameter: 8 mm
Transmission ratio of pointer: 75
Dimensions 73 cm × 9 cm × 22 cm
Weight approx. 2 kg

4 Components

1 Base plate 5 Guide bearing 9 Pointer

2 Bore for fixing screw 6 Gear transmission 10 Fastening screws, for scale
3 Fixed bearing with fixing screw 7 Scale 11 Spring clips,
4 Positions for fixed bearing 8 Pointer tip for tubes

5 Operation
5.1 Measurement with scale: 5.2 Use with an overhead projector

- Insert the tube in the fixed bearing from the right, and fasten - Lay the scale on an overhead projector, and support the
the fixed bearing in the desired position (200 mm, 400mm, expansion apparatus with stand material.
600 mm).
- Slide the tube so that its end presses on the gear rack (b) of
the gear transmission in the guide bearing and that the ap-
propriate groove (a) rests in the fixed bearing.
- Fix the tube with the fastening screw.

- I: Loosen the pointer by turning it, and fasten it on the shaft

such that the pointer tip points to the zero of the scale.
- II: Align the pointer tip towards the scale.
