IV.I Introduction
Educational Strategies or Instructional strategies are simply
techniques that teachers use to help students become independent,
strategic learners. However, due to the variety of learning styles of the
students the teacher must also consider the type of strategy he or she will
use when delivering the instruction in order to cater majority of the
learner’s ability to acknowledge understanding and learning. Different
generation have different educational strategies. We had the late 80’s and
90’s educational system wherein the strategy of the teachers are more
focused on dispersing knowledge towards their students and disregard the
ideas that can be shared by the learners. We often call this strategy as the
Traditional one because of the strict or disciplinary way of delivering an
instruction. In the other hand, we had our 21 st century learners; this is the
generation wherein students are very much attached to technologies and
trends. Of course, education must cope up with this, that’s why there is an
innovative way of changing the educational strategy of delivering the
instruction in order to in line the basic needs and can be able to relate what
the learners are in for this generation.
IV.2 Body
A. The Traditional Mode Delivering Instruction- A
Synthesis and a Critique

Teacher- centered Disciplinal

Subject matter-centered Individualistic
Teacher-dominated Direct
“Banking” Approach “Tabula rasa”
These are some of the concepts in traditional mode of delivering instruction.

Critiques of the Traditional Mode of Delivering Instruction:

“In the traditional mode delivering of instruction, the teacher is perceived to

be the only reliable source of information. Moreover, the subject-matter gains
primacy over that of the learner.”

“Some teachers think the traditional lecture method of teaching is the only
way, while others claim students need to be more actively involved in the learning
process.”

“Empty vessel: Critics of the “sage on the stage” lecture style point to the
“empty vessel” theory, which assumes a student’s mind is essentially empty and
needs to be filled by the “expert” teacher. Critics of this traditional approach to
teaching insist this teaching style is outmoded and needs to be updated for the
diverse 21st-century classroom.”
“Active vs. passive: Proponents of the traditional lecture approach believe
that an overemphasis on group-oriented participatory teaching styles, like
facilitator and delegator, favor gifted and competitive students over passive
children with varied learning abilities, thereby exacerbating the challenges of
meeting the needs of all learners.”

Synthesis of the Traditional Mode of Delivering Instruction:

Educational Strategy plays an important role for the teacher to deliver a

certain instruction towards his or her learners. One of the most commonly use or
shall we say overused strategy is the Traditional Mode of Delivering Instruction. In
a classroom lecture, the teacher will talk about one subject for a set amount of
time. Any instructor considering teaching her students using classroom lectures
should take time to consider the method's advantages and disadvantages.
Why do majority of the teachers usually fond on using the traditional way
of teaching? The answer to this question is probably because traditional teaching
is much more on the lecture-type of way in delivering the instruction. When we
talk about lecture-type it is commonly equated to teacher-friendly way of strategy
because the teacher can be able to cover ground faster on the topics, is in control
of what material the students will learn and can achieve the lesson within his or
her time-bounded frame. However, there are always 2 sides of the coin, we see
the advantage side of the traditional way of delivering instruction we should also
consider the disadvantage part of focusing only this strategy in the delivery of
instruction. During my college years, the first word that can be used to define
traditional mode of teaching is teacher-centered. Yes, this is actually correct, in
fact I have experienced most of my elementary years that majority of my
teachers’ strategy being used during the delivery of instruction is the lecture-type
way where there are no interactions happening inside the classroom. After which,
when my teachers are done discussing they allow us to answer some of the
activities in our book or sometimes allow us to copy notes from our books and it’s
just simply spoon-feeding us with much information that we can’t even retain it
on our minds. Furthermore, it’s quite alarming as well that some of the teachers
still advocates this strategy nowadays without considering the rapid change of our
today’s generation especially the type of learners we have today. But, every
teacher has her or his own style of teaching. And as traditional teaching styles
evolve with the advent of differentiated instruction, more and more teachers are
adjusting their approach depending on their students’ learning needs.
B. Innovations in the Delivery of Instruction - A
Synthesis and a Critique

Learner- centered Collaborative

Interactive Indirect
Constructivist Guided
Integrated Holistic
These are some of the concepts involving in the innovations of the
delivery of instruction.

Critiques of the Innovations in the Delivery of Instruction:

“For more and better learning appeal to all the sense of the learner, if
possible.”

“To construct knowledge and meaning out of what they are taught by
connecting them to prior experience.”

“Facilitators promote self-learning and help students develop critical

thinking skills and retain knowledge that leads to self-actualization.”

“Hybrid, or blended style, follows an integrated approach to teaching that

blends the teacher’s personality and interests with students’ needs and
curriculum-appropriate methods.”

“A child who spends twenty minutes selecting fonts and colors for a
presentation is not engaging in critical thinking, collaborative learning, or any of
the other twenty-first century skills that educators are so intent on developing.
Rather, they are just wasting instructional time.”

Synthesis of the Innovations in the Delivery of Instruction:

Although it is not the teacher’s job to entertain students, it is vital to

engage them in the learning process. Selecting a style that addresses the needs of
diverse students at different learning levels begins with a personal inventory—a
self-evaluation—of the teacher’s strengths and weaknesses. As they develop their
teaching styles and integrate them with effective classroom management skills,
teachers will learn what works best for their personalities and curriculum. With
this, the teacher will be able to practice the innovativeness in the delivery of
instruction. As we get modernized every year, the educational system also took
effort to cope up with the new trends especially in the strategy of delivering
instruction. The cliché statement says that “there is no such constant thing in this
world but change.” It is a reminder for us as teachers that our strategy that works
before will probably not be applicable at present because we have to take part of
adjusting and have an effort to be innovative in our strategies in teaching in order
to meet both ends of the teacher towards his or her students. Learners in this
generation are much more hype, active, creative, innovative and advanced.
Furthermore, these students get easily bored and they tend to have a small
amount of time in attention. We can’t blame these learners because they were
born in a generation wherein technology is its highest peak as well. They are
those kids who are fond of shortcuts, instants and result-bounded. However, the
modern-way of teaching is much difficult compared to the traditional one because
you have to think critically on how to deliver the instruction that is fitting for the
different learning styles of your students. Moreover, it is actually costly because
of the materials that you have to use when reinforcing the delivery of your
instruction. It is eventually true, that teachers will have to put their feet at the
shoe of their learners in order for them to think an innovative-way of delivering
an instruction where there is full of interactions and joy in learning. The
traditional advice that teachers not overreach with a cluster of all-encompassing
teaching styles might seem to conflict with today’s emphasis on student-centered
classrooms. Theoretically, the more teachers emphasize student-centric learning,
the harder it is to develop a well-focused style based on their personal attributes,
strengths, and goals. In short, modern methods of teaching require different
types of teachers—from the analyst/organizer to the negotiator/consultant. But
not all innovative or modern way is the right way or the best way to deliver an
instruction. Everything has its limitations and proper timing on when and where
to use a certain strategy in delivering the instruction because the worst case
scenario that will happen you might be using the wrong way and that students
might internalized it and probably be misled by it. We have to remember that,
“There is no such thing as perfect strategy in teaching, the only best strategy is
when it works”
