A Workflow to Create Intersection across

Wells
Clients want show intersection across wells with property in 3D window. They always do this
manually, pickup polygon in 2D window and convert it to vertical intersection. But sometimes, there
will be a difference between the point on the polygon and well positions, which makes the view
doesn’t look like nice. They always ask how to create the polygon of the vertical intersection in
Petrel automatically. Here is a workflow for reference.

1. Preparation

Here is something you need to prepare before you run this workflow.

1) One well log.

Because we use well log to extract well coordinates to generate points. If you don’t have any well
log. Please create a well log from any property in you project.

Note: It’s recommended to use log from Make logs instead of original well logs. Because this type of
log only start from the point which a well actually penetrates the reservoir. The PORO log which is
generate from PORO property is used in this example.

2) A point object.

This is a temporary object which is used in the workflow. You can create one points’ set using any
way you can in Petrel. Then open the spreadsheet of this points set. Delete all other points’ lines
except the first one. See below figure. (Here we name it SinglePoint)

3) A null point object.

This is also a temporary object used in workflow. once you get the above points set with only one
point, You can copy it, name the copied one NullPoint. Then delete all data lines in spreadsheet of
NullPoint. (you can set any name you want to this object, here in this document we use NullPoint)

2. Initialize workflow and Run

We assume that all wells you want to be used to create this vertical intersection have been moved to
a folder called Producers. Below is the screen shot of the workflow.
You can refer to the comments line in this workflow between line 1 and 8 to initialize the workflow.

Note: you can also click Test to check the workflow.

After you get it ready, click button Run to run this workflow. Then you get a polygon named
Wells_Vertical_Polygon in your Input window.

3. Create vertical intersection window

Once you get this polygon which connects all wells you want, right click it and click Create vertical
intersection. Then you can display any property you want with this vertical intersection.
