The most famous and dangerous pirate of all time is Blackbeard. Nobody knows much about his
early life. Some people think that his real name was Edward Teach and he was born in 1680, in
Bristol, England.
When he was young, Blackbeard was a sailor on a corsair ship. In those years, English corsairs
attacked French ships and stole food, water, weapons and clothing. But this was boring for
Blackbeard and he decided to have his own ship. He became the captain of one of the French
ships he robbed. He and his crew sailed the Atlantic from 1716 to 1718, stealing boats and selling
the things from them in different places, including America.
Blackbeard liked to look terrible, so he always carried a lot of pistols and swords with him and he
had a long, black beard – that’s why people called him Blackbeard.
Do you know what or who Jolly Roger is? Jolly Roger was not a person. It was the pirate flag.
Pirate ships used this black flag when they attacked other ships.
Pirates had some favourite places, especially in the Caribbean. The most famous pirate place
was the island of Tortuga. It looked like a turtle and that’s why it had this name. Many pirates went
there with their ships.
