Organically Grown Pechay & Mustard

I. Introduction

Majority of Filipnos now are becoming conscious with their health, that is why,
most of us are now trying to avoid eating too much fatty, oily and salty food and also we
are trying to eat as much as possible organically grown vegetables because these are
safer and healthier food for everyone.

There is a small space in our backyard around 1 meter wide and 2 meters long,
this was utilized in growing vegetable the natural way, using organic fertilizers such as
compost made of vegetables trimmings and kitchen left over and other none synthetic
materials.

II. Objectives

1. To utilize the small idle space in our backyard to make it productive.


2. To produce organically grown pechay & mustard which are safer and healthier to
eat.
3. To avoid degradation of soil by not using synthetic chemicals as fertilizers and
pesticides.

III. Activities Done in Growing Pechay & Mustard the Natural Way

1. Preparation of the space to be utilized


a. Clearing the space
b. Making a raised bed around 1 meter wide and 2 meters long
c. Seed bed preparation

2. Transplanting of seedlings

3. Covering the newly transplanted seedlings to protect them from too much heat
from the sun and prevent them from wilting.

4. Weeding & Cultivation of the raised bed

5. Watering the plants with using washed rice and fish

6. Application of compost, chicken manure and soil from the garbage area.

7. Application of ashes to protect the vegetables from insect pest

8. Harvesting

VII. Full Report on the Organic Raising of Pechay & Mustard

Pechay & Mustard are an erect biennial herb, cultivated as an annual plant about
13-15 cm tall in vegetable stage. The leaves are arranged spirally and spreading, it is
used for its immature but fully expanded tender leaves.

The following are the activities undertaken in growing pechay & mustard:

1. Land preparation – the small space in our backyard were utilized. Cutting of the
grasses and clearing the area were done, then after this or raised bed with a
width of 1 meter and a length of 2 meters were made.

2. Fertilization - the chicken manure, compost and soil from garbage area were
incorporated in the raised bed before transplanting, then after a week side
dressing of compost were done.
3. Transplanting – the seedling were transplanted after 15 days, one (1) seedling
were planted to a hole about 1 cm – depth and with around 10 cm interval
between plants and 20 cm between rows.

4. Watering the Plants – watering of the plants were done twice a day. One in the
morning around 6:00 o’ clock and 5:00 in the afternoon. Washed rice and
washed fish were used in watering the vegetables.

5. Weed control – weeding is done in order to remove the grasses that compete
with the plants for nutrients and sunlight.

6. Pest control – ashes were applied at all sides of the raised bed in order to drive
away the insects pest.

7. Harvesting – the vegetables were harvested 25-30 days after transplanting.
