    The Inca Empire originated in the early 15th century in the area around Cuzco, Peru and over the next 100 years grew to control an estimated population of 12 million people across the Andean highlands and Pacific coast of western South America. Under successive emperors, the empire expanded through both attacks on neighboring villages and establishing influence outside the Cuzco valley, reaching its greatest extent under the emperor Topa Inca Yupanqui in the late 15th century before diseases and conflict led to its downfall at the hands of the Spanish in 1535.
