Introduction to Graphing

Describe the Class:

8th Grade Algebra
Period 3
32 Students
2 IEP’s, More time for testing

Skill:
Introduction to Graphing

Objective:
Students will be able to plot points on a graph with 95% accuracy. Students will also be
able to decipher an axis of symmetry (if applicable) across axes with 95% accuracy.

Procedures:
Terms:
Reflection- a mirror image of a shape. An image will reflect through a line known
as the line of reflection. If a figure is known to be a reflection, then every point in
a figure is equidistant from each corresponding point in another figure.

Axis of Symmetry- the line through a shape so that each side is a mirror image

Line of Reflection- the line midway between the pre-image and its reflection

Reviewing procedures:
Review coordinates and x- and y- axes. Reflection examples like a mirror. Use a
paint example with your thumbprint. *Paint your thumb and make a print in the
middle and right side of the paper. Fold the paper in half and press the print onto
the other side. Show the “equidistant” rule: equal distance, same size of shape.*

Purpose of the lesson:

This is most commonly used in designing. For example, architecture, interior
decorating and design, and video game development. This skill helps us see the
object from a different angle or have an exact copy.

Modeling:
Explain the lesson where the groups of students (in fours) are to choose an
image of their own. They can either do a reflection over the x-axis or y-axis.
Show examples of Batman logo and Iron Man arc reactor.

Must have at least 30 points.

Must have x- axis and y-axis labeled
Must have the zero labeled
All points selected must be documented and separated into quadrants

Students will work on their graphs as a group and draw a picture of their choice.
Students may color the graphs if they choose

Show projects of each group with 10 minutes to spare at the end of the class.
Materials:
Graphing paper (about 4 per group)
Pencils*
Erasers*
Computer (to show examples)
Projector (to show examples)
Colored pencils
Whiteboard
Dry erase markers
Paint

Grouping Structures:
Students already in groups of four
(Chart in folder)

Modifications:
Students have already been grouped according to learning ability
Check on students through the class time for pictures and offer any assistance

Assessment:
See if students are able to make a picture with a reflection over an axis of symmetry
Students will be able to make a picture with symmetry and label points with 95%
accuracy.
No homework assigned.
Inform students we will go over translation and rotation in the next class.
