Essay The Destructors and The Lottery: Comparison of the Tone and Characters While the characters of
the two short stories The Destructors by Graham Greene and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson had
unexpected endings, both stories involved characters under similar stresses and dilemmas due to their
settings.

For most people the word “lottery” conjures up thoughts of winning a multi-million dollar prize, but for
the villagers in Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” the word brings forth a sense of dread. The lottery is an
old tradition in the village that happens every June 27th and starts out as a seemingly innocent event.
However as the process of the lottery begins, it is obvious the lottery is a thing the villagers fear.

The tradition of the lottery goes further back than anyone in the village can remember. The black box
used for the lottery is very old and is starting to fall apart yet the villagers refuse to replace it, most likely
because of the story that the box was made with parts of the original box. The black box represents the
lottery itself, and is the symbol that all of the villagers immediately associate with the lottery.

He has been through 77 Lotteries and he is for upholding tradition and feels there is no room for change.
He also says, “Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon,” during the story, which suggests that the Lottery
may be some sort of sacrifice. Mr. Summers conducts the Lottery. He is sworn in by the post master
before conducting the Lottery.

The issue in which concerns the ‘Active England’ programme is that the sale of national lottery tickets is
gradually declining. Research by Professor Ian Walker an Economist at the University of Warwick shows
that lottery ticket sales are not influenced in anyway by the fact that the lottery supports “good causes”
or the nature of those good causes. The dream of winning large sums of money is the only real driver of
ticket sales.

The short story ” The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson was a confusing and odd read for me. However, it was
unique as well. Starting off, the story introduces the village lottery day and makes the reader believe
that it is a positive thing, however, in irony it turns out to not so necessarily be a lottery.

Each year he brings up a new box which is never used. The original is always used to keep with tradition
and is old and ragged. Mr. Harry Graves is the post master. He assists Mr. Summers in the Lottery The
Lottery itself is the main character. The Lottery is the story’s conflict, and the townspeople would not
have tension if not for the lottery.

The 12% tax on every National Lottery ticket sold, worth 549 million per year or nearly 5 billion
since 1994, should be split between good causes and lottery players instead of going to the
Government. “I do not believe that the public want the lottery to be just another Government tax
sparing only 28p from the sale of each Lotto ticket and scratch card for good causes. If the government
are serious about reconnecting the lottery with the people then they should give half their annual
549 million tax cut to the good causes and half back to the players.” Etherington.
Being afraid to say openly that the lottery itself is wrong, they are talking about other villages which quit
lotteries. But after the victim is chosen, there are already three people who find the ritual unfair. Tessie
Hutchinson, “the winner” of the lottery, realizes that it’s wrong just after the tradition of the lottery
affected her. [Original source: https://essaytoolbox.com/essay-maker]
