1. PURPOSE

The purpose of this test is to measure the travel absorbed by compressing of seals and the
deformation of parts in the hydraulic circuits as a function of the induced pressure.

2. METHOD USED

A hydraulic pressure is produced in the system to be studied by plugging the outlet port. The
pressure - travel curves of the hydraulic pressure source as well as the pressure - travel curves for
the assembly made up of unit to be tested and that supplying the pressure.

3. TEST MEANS

The diagram in appendix 1 defines the test bench. It made up of the following equipment:

- a hydraulic pressure source made up of a master cylinder whose diameter is 19 mm,

- a pressure gauge (possibly),

- two valves,

- a travel measuring sensor,

- a pressure measuring sensor

- a tracing table (X - Y recording).

NOTE: The valves used must not cause volume variations in the hydraulic fluid during
maneuvering.

All air must be completely bled from the test system before the test.

4. OPERATING PROCEDURE

The measurements are made after having applied a pressure of 50 bars to the system and having
reduced this pressure until it is completely cancelled. Three maneuvers are necessary.

- The curve for the master cylinder alone is determined with valves c and f being closed.
- The curve is determined for the assembly made up of the master cylinder and the unit to be
tested. Valve e is closed and valve f is open.

- RESULT: the difference ∆C, which is obtained defines the travel loss of the unit being studied.

The travel distances will be noted every 5 bars over the range of 0 to 20 bars; they will be noted
every 10 bars for the range from 20 to 100 bars and, possibly, every 20 bars for the range from
100 to 160 bars. The curve obtained in this manner must comply with the requirements on the
functional diagram or in the special acceptance conditions for the unit being considered.

For purposes to illustration the types of curves obtained are shown in appendix 2.
