Assignment #6 – Rizal
1. Government censorship of the Noli Me Tangere.
Noli me Tangere. Do the Filipinos still know that these novels were
censured by the Spaniards? Why? Because it was offensive to the church.
Do we not remember so many of our heroes, persecuted, tortured and
killed because of causing offense to the church, because they were
fighting for our rights.
We Filipinos have fought long and hard to achieve the democracy we now
enjoy. Yet, by depriving us of our most fundamental human right, this
democracy is being suffocated. Even Rizal, the hero commemorated in
the Kulo exhibit, died defending that right. People continue to overlook the
fact that the exhibit was not about the RH Bill, but rather about Jose
Rizal's struggles. We are now able to witness firsthand the injustice that
Rizal endured at the hands of the church. Worse, rather than being
oppressed by foreign colonizers, we are oppressed by our fellow Filipinos.
Rizal gave his life for us, for our country; he gave his life fighting for our
independence. He died to expose our truth and misery to the rest of the
world. Do we want to be victims of oppression? Do we want to be
governed by a religious dictatorship? What are our options now? I hope
that my fellow Filipinos will continue to fight this battle. It's been much too
long. We have been silenced for far too long, it is time we break free from
it. Rizal tried, but is it all in vain? Do we all in that same trap? Or do we
fight?.
I say no to censorship, as many others say no to censorship. Let our
voices be heard. Let us not stand by and watch as our basic human right
is denied us. It is not about Mideo Cruz and the Kulo exhibit anymore. It is
about oppression, censorship, irresponsible journalism, misrepresentation
of religious doctrine and most of all, abuse of power. We should not
accept this sitting down. We should stand up and fight.
2. Government on mass media in the contemporary setting.
New political media are modes of communication that make it easier to
create, distribute, and share political content on platforms and within
networks that allow for collaboration and interaction. They've progressed
at a breakneck pace over the last three decades, and they're still evolving
in novel, even unexpected ways. The effect of new media on democratic
governance and political practices is far-reaching. They've changed the
way government agencies work and elected leaders interact dramatically.
They've changed the face of political journalism and redefined the position
of journalists. They've changed the way elections are fought and how
people participate in politics.
3. Who were the women in Rizal’s life? Elaborate your answers.
There were at least nine women linked with Rizal; namely Segunda
Katigbak, Leonor Valenzuela, Leonor Rivera, Consuelo Ortiga, O-Sei San,
Gertrude Beckette, Nelly Boustead, Suzanne Jacoby and Josephine
Bracken. These women might have been beguiled by his intelligence,
charm and wit.
