My name is Amelia Wills, I am currently a Year 1 teacher at Earlham Primary School in
London, UK. I moved to London to begin my teaching journey once I graduated from the University of Lethbridge in 2019 with a Bachelor of Education. I began as a primary supply teacher (ages 4 – 11) to help me gain understanding and experience in a diverse range of classrooms. Through supply teaching I was quickly picked up as a long-term supply teaching Reception (aged 4 – 5 years old) at Earlham Primary School. This is where my love for Early Childhood Education truly bloomed! Although this opportunity was brief due to the Covid pandemic, I gained valuable experience teaching early literacy and numeracy in an engaging and meaningful way. After the national lockdown, the school rehired me as a full time Year 1 teacher for the 2020-2021 school year. Earlham Primary School’s demographic is primarily Turkish and Bulgarian immigrant families, meaning that most of my students are considered ELL learners. This has given me valuable experience in creating lessons that are differentiated and catered to those who are brand new to English. The UK has a very progressive literacy program so spending a year at this school has also given me the skills to confidently teach phonics, reading and writing to eager young learners. I graduated from the University of Lethbridge with a degree in Drama Education with a specialization in Early Childhood Education in December 2019. I graduated with my first degree, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Studies, from the University of Lethbridge in June of 2017. Within my first degree I primarily specialized in directing and theatre for young audiences. I am passionate about including what I have learned about drama and theatre in my classroom as an everyday class experience in the primary setting. I believe creativity is important for students at any age. Creating these dramatic hands-on learning experiences help students embody what they are learning in a fun and engaging way. I always offer various modalities in which students can learn, so that each child has an equal chance to be successful. Through my practicums as a student teacher, I had the opportunity to teach students from the ages of Kindergarten – Grade 3. Within these classrooms I gained experience creating differentiated learning experiences for students with various special educational needs and English Language Learners. Teaching in these schools has also helped grow my classroom management skills significantly and self-regulation strategies as there were many behavioural needs within the schools. I believe that I am an ongoing learner; I am constantly looking for ways to help improve my teaching craft. I am always interested in consuming the latest education books, videos and conferences that are available to me. I try to stay up to date on current learning trends and technology to incorporate in my lesson planning. With the uncertain times ahead of us regarding Covid-19, I believe my knowledge of technology, online resources and my online teaching experience will be an asset in enabling students to continue their learning at home if need be. I am a creative teacher dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming environment conducive to learning for all. Building strong relationships with my students is extremely important to me, I want each student to feel like they belong in my classroom. I am also a team player; I enjoy creating relationships with my fellow staff members and collaborating both in and out of the classroom. I always have an open line of communication with the parents and carers to ensure they always have an understanding of the ongoings of our classroom and steps they can take to help support their child at home and at school. I am skilled in leading and designing activities that are both fun and educational for students. I am looking forward to my next chance to be back in a classroom and seeing each child’s smiling face.
