Activity 3

1. In your own words, differentiate language acquisition from language learning.

Language acquisition is the subconscious and informal learning of a language. Whereas

language learning is the conscious and formal way of learning a language (i.e., grammar
and technical rules related to language).

2. What theory of language learning is discussed in the text?

Stephen Krashen’s Theory of Second Language Acquisition, explaining how “second

language acquisition” is the process and the study of the process. This theory states that
second-language students acquire language competence by exposure to language that is
both understandable and meaningful to them.

3. Does the theory avoid the teaching of grammar completely? Justify your answer.

Krashen’s theory does not completely avoid the teaching of grammar, but he rejects
grammatical sequencing in all cases where the goal is language acquisition. Because
according to Krashen, the study of the structure of the language can have general
educational advantages and values that high schools and colleges may want to include in
their language programs. And the study of formal grammar is essential for second language
acquisition. Teacher must also be skillful enough to present explanations in the target
language so that the students can understand.
