Differentiated Content:
Outcome for all: A group of
words containing an idea, which
starts with a capital letter, and
end with a full stop, question
mark or exclamation mark is a
sentence.
Outcome for most: A paragraph is
a group of sentences about the
same idea. There are different
types of sentences in a
paragraph, and they follow a
structure of a topic sentence,
followed by detailed sentences
with a concluding sentence at the
end.
Outcome for a few: the structure
of paragraphs in fictional
narratives can be slightly
different. Generally a new
paragraph is required if there is a
change in speaker, character,
setting, time or action.

Sequenced Teaching and learning activities
Lesson Objectives: To provide an opportunity for students to explicitly learn correct paragraph technique, while also allowing Travis to
understand how words need to be in the correct order for sentences to make sense, and also how words and images combine to form meaning
in texts.
Lesson Body:
Teacher: Today we are going to be talking about the 3 parts to a paragraph, which includes: (Display on Smartboard, or write on White board)
 a topic sentence which is the main idea of the paragraph.
 supporting sentences which give details about the topic sentence.
 a concluding sentence which summarises the paragraph
You Do (15 mins)
Hand out the Hamburger Graphic Organiser to students, and ask them unjumble to sentences in Appendix 6 , and put them in the correct order
on the Graphic Organiser. They may need to add a few extra ‘layers’ to the hamburger.
Then ask the students to write a paragraph in their journals on any topic they wish, ensuring the use the correct structure as per the Hamburger
Graphic Organiser. This can be used as a summative assessment for the lesson.
Differentiation for Travis:
Travis is to complete a cutting and pasting exercise using the first sentence of the paragraph of one of the pages in his Social Story. This is a Story
written for Travis, using Travis as the main character, to assist him to deal with routine changes at school, such as having a different teacher.
Travis should be familiar with the page selected for this lesson, and already drawn a picture to complement the text in a previous lesson. The
words of the sentence will be printed in a jumbled order, and Travis is to put them in the correct order so the sentence makes sense. He may use
the train and carriages, plus the picture he has drawn in the Social Story to scaffold him if required. The SLSO may read the words to Travis to
allow him to recognise the word, and to assist him to put it in the correct order. Refer to worksheet in Appendix 7. This can be used as a
summative assessment for Travis.
