Writing Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The graph below shows the number of enquiries received by the Tourist Information Office in one city over a
six-month period in 2011.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
You should write at least 150 words.

The given line graph illustrates how

many enquiries are sent to the Tourist
Information Office in one city by 3 means
of contact over the course of 6 months in
2011, starting from January.
Overall, sending enquiries to the Tourist
Office in person and via telephone
registered an increase over the period
shown. Moreover, sending inquiries via
letters and emails was the least popular
at the end of the period, whereas
contacting directly in person accounted
for the biggest figure.
In January, there were around 900 phone
calls to the Tourist Information Office for enquiries, followed by around 750 received by letter or email and more
than 400 being directly sent to the Office in person. Over the next one month, there was a slight decrease in the
number of received inquiries through telephone and letters or emails to 800 and 650 respectively. However, an
opposite trend can be seen in the figure for enquiries being sent in person which registered 600 enquiries. By
March, sending enquiries directly in person overtook that by letter or email to reach 800 in March and surpassed
the figure for phone calls to reach more than 1200 by April.
From April, there was a dramatic rise in the number of enquiries being received by the Tourist Information Office
by telephone and in person with 1600 and approximately 1900 respectively, whereas the number of postal
enquiries and emails experienced a decrease to around 400 being the lowest figure in June.

Writing Task 2

Individuals can do nothing to improve the environment; only governments and large companies can make a
difference.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Due to climate change, our modern world has somehow started to pay more attention to environmental
protection. While some state that authorities and businesses should be completely responsible for this matter, I
personally believe each individual citizen has a role to play.
On the one hand, politicians and corporations can undeniably have a huge impact to mitigate the environmental
issue, especially when it comes to air pollution and the exceeding consumption of unrecycled products. Firstly,
new policies can be introduced to encourage people to take mass transit instead of using their personal vehicles.
In doing so, exhaust fumes to the air would be certainly reduced. Secondly, green taxes should be imposed on
corporations and factories in order to protect the environment from gas emissions. Finally, large companies or
businesses should be aware of the harmful effect of unrecyclable goods and to solve this, they should encourage
their customers to make use of the products which can be reused or recycled.
On the other hand, I am convinced that each individual is a global citizen and thus plays a pivotal role in terms of
environmental protection. It is obvious that the population of citizens always outnumbers that of politicians or
employers in all companies combined. By this I mean, entrusting all the responsibilities to government and large
businesses for the environmental protection will not be effective at all. Only does each individual contribute his
or her small part from picking up a trash to choosing a product with less packaging , our planet can be more
environmentally conserved. A small act of protecting the environment can have the significant effect on the
general public because each of those small acts is contagious to others at the same time.
In conclusion, I once again restate that protecting the environment is the joint responsibility of all forces in our
society from government, businesses to each single individual.
