Writing Task 1

The table below describes the number of employees and factories in England and Wales
from 1851 to 1901.
The given table illustrates the
figures for male and female
workers and factories in
England and Wales over the
course of 50 years, starting
from 1851.
Overall, while the number of
employees registered a
decrease over the period
shown, an opposite trend can
be seen in the number of
factories. Moreover, the proportion of male employees mostly took over that
of female ones over the period shown.
In 1851, there were 287 100 male workers and 190 000 females working in
225 factories. Over the next 30 years, all male and female employees
experienced a significant decrease in number to 126 132 in total in 1881,
whereas there was a considerable rise in the number of factories to reach 721
in the same period.
By 1881, the number of factories slightly dropped to 625 with 105 000
employees working in those factories, including 65 000 male employees and a
lower number of 40 000 females \. Towards the end of the period, the number
of male and female workers continue to decrease to 61 0000 with 31 000
males and 61 000 females working in 600 factories.
Writing Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

People living in large cities have to face many problems in everyday life.
What are those problems?
Should the government encourage people to move to regional towns?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your
own knowledge or experience.
You should write at least 254 words.

Alongside the multifaceted development, big cities these days are facing a
variety of problems at the same time. In my opinion, to mitigate these
problems, government should take more actions to encourage the
immigration to the smaller towns.
It is obvious that large cities are now facing a number of problems ranging
from environment to the well-being of their citizens. Environmental pollution
is possibly the most critical concern currently, especially air pollution. This is
due to the increasing number of transportation vehicles and their exhaust
fumes. Furthermore, even though people can gain access to various facilities in
large cities, high cost of living is still one of the major hiccups that prevents
people from a fulfilling life. Lastly, because of the high population density and
shortage of employment, crime rate is on the increase on a day to day basis.
To address these main problems, I reckon that factories, businesses and the
general public should be encouraged to relocate to rural areas or to the
outskirts. By doing so, more job opportunities will be offered to those living in
the areas and consequently there will be less committing of crimes. If factories
are distributed in a balanced way, large cities will find it easier in dealing with
the pollution issue. Last but not least, the standard of living will be improved
since people can find more affordable housing and less competition in looking
for a job. As a result, they have more budgets for other leisure activities and
thus enhancing their general well-being.
In conclusion, I once again restate my viewpoint that government should take
steps in order to encourage people moving to rural areas or the hinterlands
and in doing so, problems in cities can be addressed and people can have a
better and healthier life.
