The table below shows the proportion of different categories of families living in
poverty in Australa in 1999.
Summerise the informatin by selecting and reporting the main features, and make
comparisns where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.

The table gives information about poverty rates among six types of household in Australia
in the year 1999.
It is noticeable that levels of poverty were higher for single people than for couples, and
people with children were more likely to be poor than those without. Poverty rates were
considerably lower among elderly people.
Overall, 11% of Australians, or 1,837,000 people, were living in poverty in 1999. Aged
people were the least likely to be poor, with poverty levels of 6% and 4% for single aged
people and aged couples respectively.
Just over one fifth of single parents were living in poverty, whereas only 12% of parents
living with a partner were classed as poor. The same pattern can be seen for people with
no children: while 19% of single people in this group were living below the poverty line, the
figure for couples was much lower, at only 7%.

2. The table below shows the information on consumer spending on different items
in five different countries in 2002.Write a report for a university lecturer
describing the information shown below.
Write at least 150 words.
The given data represents the amount spent by consumers in Ireland, Italy, Spain,
Sweden and Turkey in three categories in the year 2002. As is presented in the
table data, People of those countries spent more on foods and tobaccos than they
did for dresses, education and entertainments.

According to the given data, Turk people spent the highest percentage of foods
and tobaccos amounting one-third of their total expenses on consumer products.
Irish people spent more than 28% on this category while people of Italy, Spain
and Sweden spent just over 15% for foods and tobaccos. For clothing and
footwear, the people of these five countries spent around 5% to 9% of which
Italian spent the highest percentage (9%).

Interestingly the expenditure in leisure activities and education was much less
than the amount spent on food, tobacco and dresses. The highest amount spent
on education and entertainment was done by Turkish people (4.35%) and the
least amount spent by was in Spain (1.98%). No nation among the given five
spent more than 5% in education and leisure activities according to the given
data.

3)  The table below shows the information about the underground railway systems
in six cities. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information
shown below. Write at least 150 words
The table shows data about the underground rail networks in six major cities.
The table compares the six networks in terms of their age, size and the number of people
who use them each year. It is clear that the three oldest underground systems are larger
and serve significantly more passengers than the newer systems.
The London underground is the oldest system, having opened in 1863. It is also the
largest system, with 394 kilometres of route. The second largest system, in Paris, is only
about half the size of the London underground, with 199 kilometres of route. However, it
serves more people per year. While only third in terms of size, the Tokyo system is easily
the most used, with 1927 million passengers per year.
Of the three newer networks, the Washington DC underground is the most extensive, with
126 kilometres of route, compared to only 11 kilometres and 28 kilometres for the Kyoto
and Los Angeles systems. The Los Angeles network is the newest, having opened in
2001, while the Kyoto network is the smallest and serves only 45 million passengers per
year.
4. The table below shows the information about the proportion of different
categories of families living in poverty in Australia in 1999. Write a report for a
university lecturer describing the information shown below.
Write at least 150 words.

The table gives a breakdown of the different type of family who were living in
poverty in Australia in 1999.
On average, 11% of all households, comprising almost two million people, were in
this position. However, those consisting of only one parent or a single adult had
almost doubt this proportion of poor people, with 21% and 19% respectively.
Couples generally tended to be better off, with lower poverty levels for couples
without children (7%) than those with children (12%). It is noticeable that for both
types of household with children, a higher than average proportion were living in
poverty at this time.
Older people were generally less likely to be poor, though once again the trend
favoured eldery couples (only 4%) rather than single eldery people (6%).
Overall the table suggests that households of single adults and those with children
were more likely to be living in poverty than those consisting of couples.

1)Despite the increased access to education, a significant number of people cannot read or write. What are the disadvantages
and what action should the government take?
Write at least 250 words.
NOWADAYS, EDUCATION IS EVER MORE ACCESSIBLE, BUT STILL, A CERTAIN PERCENTAGE OF THE POPULA-
TION REMAINS ILLITERATE. IN THIS ESSAY, I WILL DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION AND HOW AU-
THORITIES CAN SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
TO BEGIN WITH, EDUCATION CAN NOT ONLY TEACH A PERSON HOW TO READ AND WRITE, BUT ALSO HELP
WITH COMMON SENSE. THOSE WHO ARE ILLITERATE, FAIL TO COMPREHEND THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE RE-
QUIRED FOR DAY-TO-DAY TASKS. FOR INSTANCE, WITHOUT STUDYING BIOLOGY, IT IS DIFFICULT TO UNDER-
STAND THE NEED FOR CLEANLINESS BECAUSE THE UNEDUCATED INDIVIDUAL LACKS BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF
VIRUSES AND BACTERIA THE SURROUND US. FURTHERMORE, MOST OF THE BUSINESSES ARE KNOWLEDGE-
BASED AND REQUIRE EMPLOYEES TO LEARN, UNDERSTAND AND GRASP QUICKLY, SKILLS THAT CAN ONLY
BE RETAINED THROUGH EDUCATION. THUS, SCHOOLING IS NECESSARY FOR SURVIVAL AND TO SECURE A
WELL-PAID JOB.
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF WAYS THE GOVERNMENT CAN OVER-COME THIS CHALLENGE. FIRST, GOVERNING
BODIES CAN OFFER FREE CLASSES IN EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS TO EDUCATE THESE ADULTS. SECONDLY,
MORE AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS, SUCH AS ON TV AND RADIO, CAN ADDRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCA-
TION AND ENCOURAGE INTEREST IN SCHOOLING. FINALLY, INTRODUCING NEW TEACHING METHODS, FOR EX-
AMPLE, COMPUTER USAGE, TO MAKE LEARNING FUN AT A YOUNG AGE CAN PREVENT CHILDREN FROM STOP-
PING SCHOOL AT AN EARLY AGE. THESE ARE SOME OF THE WAYS THE GOVERNMENT CAN FIGHT ILLITERACY.
IN CONCLUSION, I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION IS NECESSARY IN ALL ASPECTS
OF OUR LIFE. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD INTRODUCE SCHEMES TO SOLVE THIS SERIOUS ISSUE FACING OUR
SOCIETY.
2) In many countries, more and more young people are leaving school and unable to find jobs after graduation. What
problems do you think youth unemployment will cause to the individual and society? Give reasons and make some
suggestions.
Write at least 250 words.
In this day and age, there are many young people who are leaving school and cannot find a job after graduation. There are some
causes for this situation and some ways to help decrease the volume of young people with no jobs.

There are certain reasons why young workers cannot find a job. First, students may not choose a suitable major at university. This
will lead to poor academic performance since they may not be interested in what they are studying. As a result, it is hard for them to
find a job. Second, in university, students may focus too much on theory and therefore may lack practical knowledge. This is mainly
because they want to have high marks on tests. Therefore, when they graduate, their skills are not enough for them to work effec-
tively.

To tackle this issue, some approaches can be adopted. To begin with, students should be equipped with practical skills. When stu-
dents study, apart from theory, they must learn more about skills that can be used for jobs in the future. This will help them become
more confident when seeking a job. For instance, with English students, besides learning the language, learning skills such as trans-
lation skills are also necessary to find a job. Moreover, the government should promote the operation of job centres. To resolve this
complication, the government can open new centres in places which have a high demand for jobs. In addition, these centres can also
link with businesses which need employment.

In conclusion, there are many reasons for youth unemployment, but this problem can be eliminated with methods that can be taken
by both individuals and the government.
3) Some people think that the best way to solve global environmental problems is to increase the cost of
fuel. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Write at least 250 words.

Raising fuel prices is believed to be the best solution to the planet’s environmental problem. Although this measure
may reduce the amount of toxic fumes that are released into the atmosphere to some extent, I believe there are several
more effective alternatives to tackle environmental issues.

On the one hand, such a policy may help to lower emissions from certain modes of transport. As the price of fuel
increases, commuters may resort to using public transport instead of using their own vehicles in order to save money.
Moreover, drivers who are unwilling to spend more money on petrol will be encouraged to use vehicles that run on
renewable and environmentally-friendly energy sources as an alternative, such as electric cars and bicycles. As a
consequence, the number of privately-owned vehicles travelling on public roads would be significantly reduced, which
in turn would significantly reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere each year. This would
effectively enhance the air quality.

However, as environmental issues stem from many causes, there are several more suitable ways to address these
problems. People’s lack of awareness and knowledge about such problems is one of the primary underlying issues that
results in pollution. Therefore, the government must educate the public about the current state of their environment and
negative lifestyles in order to reduce the long-term impacts of their ignorance. Additionally, water pollution is a severe
issue in many developing countries these days and is often found downstream from industrial zones where
factories discharge toxic waste without proper treatment. Such an issue requires governments to implement stricter
regulations to minimize the negative health impacts and help sustain the economy.

In conclusion, since each problem requires a unique solution, it is justifiable to say that increasing the price of fuel is
not the single best resolution for environmental issues.
4. The crime rate nowadays is decreasing compared to the past due to advanced
technology which can prevent and solve the crime. Do you agree or disagree?
Write at least 250 words

Our world is increasingly safer from crime than it was in the past. Although the
reduction in crime rates can be attributed to a host of factors, I would argue that the
decrease in crime is primarily due to advanced technology. Advanced technology has
made our world a safer one. This is apparent in two main areas. First, the surveillance
cameras are being installed everywhere. These cameras, combined with the
widespread availability of Smartphone cameras, mean that people can be
photographed and their actions videoed easily. Second, when a crime does occur, law
enforcement agencies can use extensive forensic techniques to solve the crime. This
helps to deter anyone contemplating a criminal act. There are, of course, other
explanations for the decrease in crime. Some people believe that there are more
criminals now than in the past. This could be due to the fact that more people are
living together in crowded environments. Crime is also said to be committed by
groups of criminals, rather than individuals. This is largely true of cybercrime, which
is a growing problem. All in all, I think the main reason for the decrease in crime is
advanced technology. There are still many criminals, but they operate in fear of being
caught and prosecuted due to the presence of modern surveillance cameras and
forensic techniques.

5. Some people believe that no one should do the same job for all their working
life. Others argue that doing the same job brings advantages for individuals,
companies, and society. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Write at least 250 words.

Considered by some to be the cornerstone of a happy and productive work life, the
idea of having a single, lifelong profession has been challenged recently. In fact,
some individuals argue that doing the same job for an entire career is not necessarily
a good idea. In this essay, I will give my personal perspective in this debate. On the
one hand, some people believe that doing the same job for an entire career is not
necessarily a bad thing. For example, some jobs, such as doctors and lawyers, require
years of study and practice to master. If a person is lucky enough to find a career they
love, doing the same job for life could bring great joy and satisfaction. Others argue
that doing the same job brings contentment and peace of mind, allowing workers to
focus on other aspects of life, such as friends, family, and hobbies. Having one's job
mastered is also a great source of confidence for workers, which enhances their
performance and benefits society as a whole. One the other hand, I believe that there
are more benefits to doing different jobs throughout one's life. One benefit is the
opportunity to gain a diverse set of skills and knowledge. Another is that workers are
able to avoid getting stuck in a rut or hitting a career plateau. Being able to
continuously learn and grow through new and varied experiences keeps workers
engaged and motivated. For example, a computer programmer who has been in the
same job for over twenty years may become bored and restless, leading to a drop in
workplace performance. By changing careers and moving into a managerial position,
for instance, this same computer programmer may feel rejuvenated and reenergized,
which is good for both the worker and the company. In conclusion, there are certainly
advantages to doing the same job for a lifetime. However, in my opinion, changing
jobs throughout one's career is more desirable. Not only does it bring personal growth
and new adventures, it also provides opportunities to gain skills and knowledge that
would otherwise remain untapped.

6. Some people say advertising has positive economic effects. Others think it has
negative social effects because it will make people dissatisfied with who they are
and what they have. Discuss both views and give your own opinion
Write at least 250 words
Advertising has been a contentious issue for many years, with some people viewing it
as having positive economic effects, while others believe that it has negative social
effects. In this essay, I will discuss both views and provide my own opinion on the
matter. On one hand, those who believe that advertising has positive economic effects
argue that it creates jobs and drives economic growth by promoting products and
services. Advertising also stimulates demand for products, leading to increased
production and sales. Moreover, advertising helps to increase competition and
innovation in the market, which benefits consumers by providing them with more
choices and better quality products. On the other hand, those who think that
advertising has negative social effects argue that it can lead to dissatisfaction with
one's life and create unrealistic expectations. They believe that advertising often
promotes unrealistic images and lifestyles that are unattainable for the majority of
people, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Furthermore,
advertising can also lead to consumerism and materialism, which can have negative
effects on the environment and society as a whole. In my opinion, both views have
some validity. Advertising does have economic benefits, but it also has the potential
to have negative social effects. However, I believe that the negative effects of
advertising can be mitigated by regulating the content and messages that are being
promoted. Governments can enforce laws that regulate the representation of images
and lifestyles in advertisements, ensuring that they are realistic and attainable.
Additionally, media literacy programs can be implemented to educate people about
how advertisements are created and the messages they convey. In conclusion, while
advertising has both positive and negative effects, I believe that the negative effects
can be mitigated through regulation and education. By ensuring that advertisements
promote realistic and attainable images and lifestyles, and by educating people about
the messages being conveyed, we can ensure that advertising continues to have
positive economic effects, while avoiding negative social consequences.
28. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below. Write at
least 150 words.

The given table graph illustrates information about the period of existence for men and women in 6
different nations in the years 1990, 1950 and 1990.

Overall, it is apparent from the very first glance that, year by year, life duration was increased and
females lived more than males. The smallest life cycle was in Austria in 1900. In contrast longest
was in Sweden in 1990.

Looking at the information in more detail, in 1900, the smallest expectation of life in Austria, the
male, was 37.8 years and in females, 39.9 years. It escalated over the period and reached 73.5 years
in men and 8.4 years in women in 1990. In addition, in Belgium, it was approximately as same as in
Austria in 1990, 73.4 and 80.4 years respectively.

Moreover, in Denmark in 1900, the difference between both gender life expectancy was 3.2 years,
in 1950 2.6 years and in 1990 5.8 years. Furthermore, in Germany, males and females lived 64.6
and 68.5 years in 1950; after four decades, it increased and reached 73.4 and 80.6 years.

Additionally, in Sweden, the longevity of life was highest as compared to other countries, in 1900
for males 52.8 years and in females 53.3 years. In 1950 it was 69.9 and 72.6 years and at last in
1990 74.7 and 80.7 years.
29. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below. Write at
least 150 words.

The transformation of a small town: Trenton, between 1990 and 2012 is portrayed in the given
maps.

In 1990, Trenton was a small town, which was bisected into almost equal parts by the High Street.
Towards the immediate East of the street, there was a café and a park and next to it, there were
settlement (Houses). A theatre and some shops were there towards the South-east of the street. The
four major establishments to the West of the street were a school, a bank, a hospital and a library.
There was also a playing field with trees at the North of the town, adjacent to the street.

After 22 years, the Eastern part of the High Street changed a lot. Houses were developed to flats,
which expanded towards the North. The Café and park got transformed to a hotel and a golf course.
A supermarket replaced shops, whereas a cinema replaced the theatre. Settlements further expanded
at the North, crossing the street, and the hospital increased its size. A restaurant occupied the space
of the bank. Trees at the South were cleared for a technopark.

Overall, the development of the town in this short span of time was tremendous.
30. The table below provide information on rental charges and salaries in three areas of
London. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below.
You should write at least 150 words.

The illustration outlines weekly house rents in three areas in London and the wage recommendation
to afford those accommodations. As is obvious, more the room number in a house, more the rent
and property renting in Notting Hill is expensive.

As is presented in the table, Notting Hill’s house rent is the highest among the three given areas
where a single bedroom house is usually rented at 375 pounds per week. It is advised that someone
should earn over 98 thousand pounds in a year to afford such a living place in Notting Hill. Two-
bedroom property in this area would cost £485 while it would be as high as £738 for a three-
bedroom apartment. The renter’s yearly wage should be higher than 127 thousand and 190 thousand
respectively to afford two and three-bedroom apartments.

House rent at Regent’s Park is higher than that of Fulham but lower than the rent in Notting Hill.
House with one, two and three bedrooms in Regent’s Park would cost 325, 450 and 650 pounds
consecutively and to rent a house in this area someone needs an annual salary between 85 thousand
and 170 pounds. House rent is in Fulham is cheapest, 215 for one and 600 for three-bedroom
property and someone needs to have a yearly earning of over 157 thousand pounds to afford a three
bedroom apartment and not less than 56,500 pounds to live in a one-bedroom flat.
28 Some people think that the main purpose of schools is to turn children into good citi-
zens and workers, rather than to benefit them as individuals. To what extent do you
agree or disagree?
Write at least 250 words.
The main purpose of schools has been a topic of debate for many years, and different people
hold different opinions on what the primary goal of education should be. While some argue
that the primary purpose of schools is to prepare children for future employment and to train
them to be good citizens, others believe that the primary goal of education should be to ben-
efit students as individuals and to foster their personal growth and development.
On one hand, it can be argued that schools serve an important role in preparing students for
the workforce and for active participation in society. This includes providing students with
the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their chosen careers, as well as helping
them develop social skills, civic responsibility, and other traits that are important for being a
good citizen.
On the other hand, it's important to remember that education is not just about preparing stu-
dents for the workforce or society. It's also about fostering personal growth, creativity, and
intellectual curiosity. Schools can help students develop critical thinking skills, explore their
interests, and discover their passions, which can ultimately benefit them as individuals and
contribute to their overall well-being and happiness.
In conclusion, making ideal citizens and dedicated workers should be the true objective of
our schools. The greater good of society, the bright and prosperous future of a nation, and
the personal achievements of individuals are connected with the way we teach our children
in schools and that is why our education should focus on morality and quality.
29 Some people think that all teenagers should be required to do unpaid work in their
free time to help the local community. They believe this would benefit both the individ-
ual teenager and society as a whole. Do you agree or disagree?
Write at least 250 words.
Requiring teenagers to do unpaid work in their free time to benefit the local community is a controversial is-
sue, with both potential benefits and drawbacks.
On one hand, it can be argued that such work can benefit both the individual teenager and society as a whole.
For example, volunteering can provide valuable opportunities for personal growth, skill development, and
community involvement. It can also help teenagers develop a sense of responsibility, empathy, and civic en-
gagement, which can benefit them in their personal and professional lives.
Additionally, volunteering can be a valuable way to support local communities and address social issues. It can
help provide much-needed services, resources, and support to those in need, and can contribute to building
stronger, more connected communities.
On the other hand, it's important to consider the potential drawbacks of requiring unpaid work from teenagers.
For example, some may argue that such requirements could be seen as coercive or infringing on individual
freedoms. Additionally, some may argue that teenagers already have a busy schedule with school, extracurricu-
lar activities, and social obligations, and that adding more requirements may be burdensome or unfair.
In summary, while requiring teenagers to do unpaid work in their free time to benefit the local community can
have potential benefits, it's important to consider both the potential advantages and drawbacks. Ultimately, any
decisions on this issue should take into account the needs and interests of both the individual teenager and the
local community, and should be made with careful consideration and planning.
30 Nowadays people depend on technology for leisure activities. Is this a positive or nega-
tive development?
Write at least 250 words.
In the modern world, technology significantly plays an important role in many human activ-
ities, especially the pastime. This causes lives’ dependence on most of the growth of smart
equipment. The increasing dependence on technology for leisure activities is a complex is-
sue with both positive and negative aspects. Here are some insights:
On the positive side, technology has provided many new forms of entertainment and leisure
activities that were not previously possible. For example, streaming services and online
gaming platforms have given people access to a vast array of movies, TV shows, and video
games that can be enjoyed from the comfort of their own homes. Social media and commu-
nication apps have also provided new ways for people to connect with others, share experi-
ences, and form communities based on shared interests.
Additionally, technology has made leisure activities more accessible to a wider range of
people. For example, people with disabilities, mobility issues, or other limitations may have
greater access to leisure activities through technology. Online communities and social net-
works also provide opportunities for people who may not have access to traditional social
spaces or who feel marginalized in their offline communities.
However, there are also potential negative consequences of relying too heavily on technol-
ogy for leisure activities. For example, excessive screen time and sedentary behavior can
contribute to health problems such as obesity, eye strain, and poor sleep quality. Addition-
ally, technology can be addictive, and excessive use may contribute to social isolation, dis-
connection from the natural world, and decreased physical activity.
In summary, while technology has provided many new opportunities for leisure activities
and entertainment, it's important to be mindful of the potential negative consequences and to
strive for a balanced approach to technology use. This includes prioritizing physical activity,
social connection, and other forms of leisure that do not involve screens or technology.
