INTRODUCTION
In this report we explore 12 different websites on their function, attractiveness and content.
Answering simple questions like: ‘How attractive is this website?’, ‘What special functions does the
website have?’, and at the end of each website analysis, we also give a conclusion. Further we
combine all our conclusions into one big conclusion.

This report was created by 3 students. Tibe Decloedt was responsible for El Mundo, Walmart, and
Arteveldehogeschool. Michalina Urbanska for FentyBeauty, Online Fashion, and PNet. Kirill
Selivantchik for Novatek, JSSO, and MercadoLibre. Andy Senay for Craiglist, Tesla, and Apple.

ANALYSIS OF 12 SITES ON THEIR FUNCTION,
ATTRACTIVENESS AND CONTENT
El Mundo
https://www.elmundo.es/

El Mundo is a Spanish news website, it is one of the largest papers in Spain being only second to El
País. Due to the change in the market for physical papers, El Mundo has had to transition to digital
papers including their own website. (El Mundo, n.d.)

The website uses their iconic blue and white colour scheme and carries this throughout every
category and every article. They use the font size on their front page to indicate which are the most
important current articles. On the bottom right of these clickable article titles u can also spot a small
number indicating the number of comments the article has received. The titles on the front page
also display who the author is, in which city the document was written, a subtitle and sometimes a
picture. Scrolling down on the site will result in older articles being loaded and displayed. Also,
sports scores and less important information is displayed when doing this. (El Mundo, n.d.)

The blue header of the website contains the logo of El Mundo, to its left the date can be read and to
the right a button to subscribe and search option can be found. Below the logo you will find a series
of categories. Clicking one of these will guide you to another webpage containing different
subsections about the chosen topic and a similar layout to the home page. (El Mundo, n.d.)

In conclusion the website tries to be as straightforward as possible and is easy to navigate for all
types of users. The main aim of the website is to clearly display trending articles and entice people to
click on them and read them. The website will then also display relating articles “that you might also
like” at the bottom in an attempt to keep you on the website and reading. (El Mundo, n.d.)

Walmart
https://www.walmart.com/

Walmart is one of the largest retail companies worldwide and has a multitude of stores throughout
the world.

It is immediately clear that the website is trying to get you to buy products or at least visit the stores.
On the landing page you will often find a series of images passing by. All of these show you the
advantages of shopping at Walmart or getting a Walmart+ subscription. When I visited the site, I was
greeted by all types of discounts, followed by an image that told me I could get free shipping, etc.
(Walmart, n.d.)

This main part of the website has mostly all non-food items and can be navigated with the search
bar at the top or by scrolling down and clicking on their respective category. Once you've located the
type of item you want, for example a laptop, Walmart will often display the “Best Seller” or some
other featured item first. (Walmart, n.d.)

Other useful tools on the website include buying gift cards, creating a “My Items” list, which is
similar to a wish list, track your orders, find local stores, create shopping lists and much more.

4
Websites 2
On the top left a button reading “pickup & delivery” can be clicked. This will take you to the grocery
shopping part of Walmart. Here you can easily scroll through any of the typical things you’d find in a
grocery store or use the search bar at the top to look for specific items. Prices are displayed for all
items and a shopping cart is visible at the right side of the screen. (Walmart, n.d.)

The Walmart website is generally easy to navigate especially due to its search bar function. This
allows for the user to easily and quickly find the product they are looking for.

Artevelde University of Applied Sciences

https://www.artevelde-uas.be/

This is a school website for a Belgian school but provided in English. The school attracts many
international students with multicultural backgrounds so an English website is important.

When you reach the homepage, you will see a couple of nice photographs of students in the city of
Ghent together with some graphic designs and the use of the colour orange. On the top left you’ll
find the Artevelde university of applied sciences logo that can be used as a home button on all other
pages past the homepage. Next to it you’ll find category buttons, a button to change to the Dutch
version of the site and a link to login. (Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, n.d.)

When you scroll down there are two tables, one contains the news and the other is an event
calendar. They both display three items but have a clickthrough button underneath to see more.

At the bottom of the page there are a couple of clickable links that will take you to a multitude of
different interesting subpages. On the bottom right of your screen you will also find an orange
button reading “Need Help?”. Clicking the button will give you a contact form. Unfortunately, in this
form some things are not translated and still displayed in Dutch. Such as “geef verplicht veld aan”
,and “mogelijk gemaakt door...”. (Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, n.d.)

Scrolling back upwards and looking at the main body of text on the page you’ll find the types of
programmes the school provides and clicking them will show you more information about each kind
of program and what courses they are. To its right you’ll find the different fields of study at
Artevelde and you can find your preferred program through filtering for your field of
interest. (Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, n.d.)

There’s also a link underneath this all that will allow you to talk to staff and students about any
questions you have.

FentyBeauty
https://www.fentybeauty.com/

It is a website dedicated to selling cosmetics and make-up products designed by a very famous
singer all over the world, namely Rihanna. The brand gained popularity thanks to the creation of
universal shades of cosmetics designed for a wide range of skin tones, for which choosing a cosmetic
may be difficult. (Fenty Beauty, n.d.)

The style of this website is very clean. It is easy to find everything we are looking for. At the very top
of the main page, we have two options to choose from. "Fenty beauty" for face cosmetics and
"Fenty skin" for body cosmetics. (Fenty Beauty, n.d.)

Let's start with "Fenty beauty". On the main page, we can see a strap, thanks to which we can easily
choose cosmetics for the face, body, eyes, lips and cheeks, and we have access to many accessories.

5
Websites 2
Also, one of the tabs shows tutorials where Rihanna herself presents her products on videos, using
them on herself. In other videos, professional make-up artists use FentyBeauty products to do make-
up on models. This is a very good technique to attract customers, because video can realistically
reflect the quality of products. Also, we have the option of choosing the perfect foundation for your
skin tone, Rihanna's favourite products, virtual consultation option and so on. The color scheme of
the website focuses mainly on a wide range of skin tones. Brown, nude and light colours
predominate. By scrolling down, you can see the products offered by Rihanna and directly add them
to the cart. Pictures of cosmetics are made very professionally, their colours also encourage you to
buy them. Scrolling even further down, you can see the mission statement of this brand. (Fenty
Beauty, n.d.)

On the main page of "Fenty skin" there is also a visible strip that makes it easy to find skin products
such as moisturizers, make-up removers, serums and so on. Also, you can see an option to watch
tutorials on which these cosmetics are used. In the "About Fenty skin" tab we can find information
that the company focuses on producing recyclable packaging and its products do not contain harsh
ingredients, are gluten free and vegan. Mostly light purple or nude tones predominate on this site.
Scrolling down, you can see professional photos of products as well as photos of models posing with
those cosmetics. (Fenty Beauty, n.d.)

Overall, the website is very easy to navigate and there is no overload of information.

Online Fashion
https://www.onlinefashion.com.hk/

Online Fashion Skincare is a Chinese website which sells high-quality skin care products and offers
fast and convenient global shipping.

On the homepage, the fleeting photos of their cosmetic assortment attract your attention at first
glance. Also, there are several tabs at the top of the page that give easy access to the products to
different body parts. On the right side there are 5 icons thanks to which you can communicate with
brand representatives to ask questions or visit their websites and social channels. These are
Facebook, Instagram, YouTube WeChat, and WhatsApp, respectively. After clicking on one of them,
we will be directly redirected to the given page. (Online Fashion, n.d.)

Scrolling down, you can see a lot of photos of products of different categories that you can directly
add to the basket. When we go even lower, metamorphoses of people who used the products
offered by this brand appear. They are really shocking and worthy of applause, therefore they are
intended to encourage a potential customer to buy these products. (Online Fashion, n.d.)

There is a lot of information on the website which is a bit chaotic. A lot of colours and photos mean
that a potential customer may have difficulties finding his/her desired product. (Online Fashion,
n.d.)

All in all, this website focuses on getting the customer's attention on a wide range of products.
Unfortunately, this could mean that a potential client may have troubles when choosing his or her
orders. Also, it is difficult to navigate.

Websites 2
PNet
https://pnet.co.za/

PNet is one of the main online recruiting communities in South Africa. There are currently over
12000 recruiters and over 2 350 000 specialist job seekers on the platform.

The first thing that attracts attention when opening this website is the encouraging text "Your new
Job is waiting for you". Below this text you will find information about the number of jobs available
in South Africa. In the middle there are two white boxes through which we can search for a job by
entering the job type, title, skill or company in the first of them, and the location which interests us
in the second. (PNet, n.d.)

After scrolling down, four tabs are visible through which you can search for jobs by category, city,
popularity and jobs by job title. At the end of the page, you will find information that the site is also
available for download as a mobile application as well as the option to browse for a job by the first
letter. At the very bottom of the page there is a bunch of information about PNet company. (PNet,
n.d.)

As for the website design, red and white colours predominate. Red is the colour that attracts
attention. Very easy self-service in job search, makes people applying for a job find what they are
looking for in a short time. (PNet, n.d.)

To sum up, PNet is a website quite simple to use and has many job search options, so everyone can
choose the option that best suits them.

Novatek
https://www.novatek.ru/en/

Novatek is a Russian company and one of the largest natural gas companies in the world, namely the
seventh-largest. It is situated in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous region in West Siberia, but their
sales office is situated in Moscow. Their main products are petroleum and Natural gas, with which in
2020 they produced a revenue of 9.84 billion. Besides that Novatek had 5997 employees as of 2013
(Wikipedia contributors, 2021).

When going to the main page, you are presented with some basic information about the company,
and some SlideShare pictures. Although the pictures are not of really high quality, they do show a
beautiful landscape of Siberia. Scrolling down the page, you will receive more information about the
company and some information for investors that are maybe interested in the company. At the
bottom you will find contact information and the address of the company. Generally, the homepage
or the main page is just an overall overview about everything you would want to know about the
company if you are not looking to go into details. If you are interested in the company or are an
investor, you could click on the 3 stripes in the upper right corner. Doing that a list of more detailed
information will pop up with information like: corporate governance, all their projects, photo gallery,
investor relations and sustainable development. (Novatek, n.d.)

Looking at the site from a perspective if it is attractive or not, the design of the site is very simple
and clean. They use a lot of figures to represent information and it is all organized, so you can find
your way very easy. The colours of the site are also in the same colour as the logo of the company.
Also one little detailed that is noticeable if you play around on the site is that there is a button to go
‘to top’, in case you scrolled a lot down. (Novatek, n.d.)

7
Websites 2
In conclusion, we can learn from Novatek that providing the user of the site an easy interface is
important. Giving the user a sort of dashboard about the general information about the company.
Making sure that you can explain what the company is about in simple terms and ways should be the
way to go.

Japan Student Service Organization

https://www.jasso.go.jp/en/

Jasso (or fully written: Japan Student Services Organization) is a Japanese organization under the
authority of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. The
organization gives out scholarship loans, helps students from abroad and provides student life
support programs (“About JASSO,” n.d.).

At first glance the site looks okay with some pictures here and there. The main page has multiple
slideshows that give different information and will send you to different links. Scrolling to the
bottom, you can find different links for people interested in studying in Japan, information about
JASSO, Japanese language education centres and etc. This can also be found at the top of the page.
The site doesn’t give really much information much valuable information on the homepage. To find
what you need, you would need to click at least 3 different links to get to the page you want. The
problem is also that there are almost to no figures or pictures to help you navigate through the site,
the website is mostly made out of text and letters. In case you cannot find what you need, there is a
search bar at the top right corner. The colours of the site are the same as the logo of the
organization. Clearly the site was not created to by aesthetic and have a unique feel to it, probably
the company was going more for an informative approach, where you would find all the information
needed regarding studying in Japan. (Japan Student Service Organization, n.d.)

To give the user the right feeling, you have to decide as a company which feel you want your users
to have when navigating through the site.

MercadoLibre
https://www.mercadolivre.com.br/

MercadoLibre (or in Portuguese MercadiLivre) is an Latin-American e-commerce store similar to

Amazon. It is a Argentine company that was founded in 1999 by Marcos Galperin. The company
operates under 5 main business units, namely MarketPlace, Mercado Pago, Marcado Publicado and
Mercado shops (Wikipedia contributors, 2021).

When you visit the page you will instantly recognize that it is an e-commerce store, similar to
Amazon, it shows variety of products at the main screen with some products that are on sale. At the
top you have a search bar to search for items you are interested in. In the top right corner you can
find your cart with the stuff that you are planning to buy. Overall MercadoLibre looks very similar to
other popular e-commerce stores like AliExpress and Amazon. The way you can recognize this is by
the products they display and the simple design they use. You have a search bar, product that you
might be interested in, products that are on sale and a button to choose a category. Every product
has a clear picture of the way it looks, very simple and effective way to make users interested in
products. Also the company subcategorises products of different companies, this way you can look
for product only from a certain company. The colours of the site are mainly yellow and white, which
are again, the colours of the logo. (Mercado Livre, n.d.)

8
Websites 2
Concluding this, MercadoLibre has a very simple and easy site to navigate through. They only put the
things on the site that are necessary for a person that is looking to buy something online instead of
going to the store.

Craigslist
https://lille.craigslist.org/

Craigslist is a marketplace where people can advertise jobs, services, housings, products etc.
invented in San Francisco, 1995 and later spread throughout 700 cities and areas in 70 countries. The
company consists of 50 employees which employ millions of employees. (Wikipedia contributors,
2003)

As for the website, it hasn’t changed in over 20 years. When opening the website you’re welcomed
with no images and almost no colors. The only color present is the same shade of blue. The fonts of
the texts seem to not differ from each other, only the Craigslist logo and the location seems to be in
a different font from the rest. Despite the website being very bland, it is very bluntly organized and
simple. With bluntly organized I mean that you get what you’re looking for in one page without
needing to click around to find what you’re looking for. The website is divided in 3 parts. On the left
side you can find the logo, with under it the login buttons and an event calendar which is meant for
dates in which you can make use of the advertisements. Under the calendar you will find info which
you would usually find in the footer of a website which explains Craigslist’s website-information and
policies. In the middle part of the website you can see it begins with telling you the Craigslist location
you’re using and under you’ll find the different categories of what you’re looking for. On the right
there’s a bar that consists off the language settings and the different locations Craigslist is available
in. When selecting a category you’re interested in, you’re led to a page where you can scroll up and
down to search for what you’re looking for and there’s also a filter to make your search easier. What
also stood out to me is that it doesn’t make use of advertisements at all, which in this day and age is
very rare to see.

The Craigslist website goes to show that functionality and ease is more important than
attractiveness for a freelance type of website.

Tesla
https://www.tesla.com/en_eu

Tesla is a famous company created by the successful Elon Musk which is primarily known for their
electric cars. The name derives from the early Nikola Tesla who had a great impact to our present
technology.

What regards the website is that it’s very minimalistic. As soon as you enter the website you’re
greeted with one of Tesla’s cars in a natural environment. The frame of the image runs until the
edges of the website which gives it a simple and calm aesthetic. On the top left you’ll find the name
of the company in its known font. On the top-center of the website you will find a bar with all the
products they sell. On the far-right of the page you can approach a selectable tool which makes a bar
visible that includes excess information about the company and products. On the main page when
scrolling down it elegantly transitions to an image of the product they sell. This is appropriate
because the company only sells 6 products at the moment. When selecting one of the products
you’re led to the same genre of page like the homepage. You’re led to a page where you scroll down
and are accompanied with different images and videos of the product and it’s features specifically
explained. If you decide to purchase one of the products you’re led to a 5 easy step page which leads
you to a checkout point in which you can finish your order. (Tesla, n.d.)

All in all the website lets the products speak for themselves. With this type of website you don’t
need to speak the language they use to understand how it works, it’s that simple and well-organized.

Apple
https://www.apple.com/befr/mac/

Apple, invented by Steve Jobs, may he R.I.P, is an electronics company that creates the newest
trends with each release.

Apple has a very sleek minimalistic vibe to it while it has some maximalistic features to eat. When
entering the homepage you’re greeted with their latest popular products and features. At the top of
the page there’s a bar which begins with the Apple logo and then continues to the product
categories. The color scheme is very simple, the most prominent colors are the iconic dark and light
greys they use. When selecting one of the product categories it leads you to a page that has the
latest features within that category and a new bar appears with sleek 2D versions of the products
they sell within that category. The website made it easy to purchase a product. When selecting the
desired product you want to buy it leads you to a page where you slide down and select the features
you want your product to have to then eventually check out. At the bottom of each page you’ll find
the same footer which makes it easy for users to relocate to different aspects of the
website. (Apple, n.d.)

It’s interesting how the company made such a compacted website look so simple. Apple is known for
being easy to use and it shows in their website.

CONLCLUSION

From our analysis we can conclude that as a company it is important that your website is very
simple, and easy to navigate in. This is important because as a customer you want to find your
products quickly, and easy. Attractiveness is also important, but the importance of having a good
functionality, and ease is better.

If you want to create a good looking, functional website, you should avoid using too much colors, too
much popups, and anything that makes it look chaotic. This could turn away your customer because
the website looks sketchy, or like a scam.
