Format and Outline for the Exegesis Paper

Exegesis: Book of Revelation

Spring 2016

Title Page

- Will put the principal pericope for exegetical analysis in the book of Revelation

I. Introduction (Length: 1 to 1.5 pages)


a) Consists of:
i) The rationale for the study explaining why the students selected the text.
(1) Why was the text so compelling
ii) The thesis statement
(1) What is the major text?
(2) What is the minor text?
(3) What is the possible relationship between the major and minor texts

(a) What are you attempting to demonstrate or show regarding the major pericope;
should consists of at least 10 verses
(i) Same thing for the minor text; should consists of at least 4 – 5 verses
1. You are trying to show how is the major text confirmed by the minor text or
how does it relate, contradict or challenge the minor text, in a possibly
paradoxical way
iii) The methodology
(1) An overview of the steps you are following
iv) The scope
(1) How are you limiting the topic; what aspects are being intentionally excluded from the
study? What are the limits so that you are staying focused
II. Background:
a) Biblical Background: Hebrew Bible & New Testament, especially as it relates to apocalyptic
literature
b) Historical background. You are putting any aspects of the immediate historical, social & political
context relevant (ie: any types of things that are challenged)
III. Exegesis of the Major Text
a) Major Text Unit Analysis
IV. Exegesis of the Minor Text
a) The ways in which the major text relate to the minor text. Comparison or Contrast?
V. Hermeneutical Application
a) How do the major & minor texts speak cogently to the current times
b) Are there any contemporary apocalyptic signs of today?
