OBJECTIVE: To become aware of the characteristics of closed

and open shapes

What are Shapes?

In geometry, a shape can be defined as the form of an object or

its outline, outer boundary or outer surface.

Everything we see in the world around us has a shape. We can

find different basic shapes such as the square, rectangle, and
oval or the rectangular prism, cylinder, and sphere in the objects
we see around us. These geometric shapes appear in objects we
see as credit cards, bills and coins, finger rings, photo frames, dart
boards, huts, windows, magician‟s wands, tall buildings, flower
pots, toy trains, balloons etc.

Open shapes

If a shape is closed, you can take a pencil and trace it all the way
around back to where you started, without running into any
breaks. If there is a break in the shape, that means it is not closed
and is called an open shape.

An open shape is made up of line segments, but there is at least

one line segment that isn't connected to anything at one of its
endpoints. Examples of open shapes:

Closed shapes

If a shape is enclosed from all the sides end-to-end and form a

figure with no openings is called a closed shape.

Let's go through some examples.

Example 1

Is this shape open or closed?

If the start point and endpoint are different then, it is an open

shape.

So, the given shape is open.

Example 2

Is this shape open or closed?

If all sides enclose a shape, it is a closed shape.

So, the given shape is closed.

What is the difference between open and closed shapes?

Considering the definition of open and closed shapes, the

difference between the two is tabulated below:
