2. Process Capability

1. Answer the following questions:

a. Discuss briefly by using neat sketch the meaning of process capability and the
process capability index.
b. What are the available solutions, if the process not capable?
c. What is the relation between the design limits and natural limits?

2. The specification limits for the weight of a cereal pack are 250 ± 5 gm. The mean
weight of the production for the last six months was 252 gm. and the standard
deviation was 1.5 gm.
a. Compute the estimates of process capability.
b. How good are the estimated values?
c. How can the process be adjusted?

3. If you produce a certain product that has a certain quality characteristic of an average
of 100 mm. and a standard deviation of 10 μm. and the sample size used for this
characteristic equal to 10 units. But your design specification limits approximately
about 100.05 mm. and the other limit is 99.96 mm.
a. Determine the values of the process capability indices.
b. How good are the determined values?
c. How can you adjust your process?

Homework Assignment

1. A plastic strip is required to be manufactured within a maximum thickness of 304.70

mm. and a minimum thickness of 304.55 mm. The manufactured strip thickness is
normally distributed with a standard deviation of 0.025 mm. Determine the condition
for the manufacturing process to be capable.

2. An electrical firm manufacturing light bulbs that have a life that is normally
distributed with a mean equal to 8000 hours and a standard deviation of 40 hours. If
the required specification is 7975 ± 125 hours. Is the process capable? Why? If not,
what do you recommend so that the process can be optimally capable?
