 The redemptive names
The Names of God.
The names of God express His attributes, His
covenant or promises, it represents his nature or
His very essence.
The word translated “name” in the Hebrew is the
word Shem which represents more than a name but
also means renown, fame, character, authority
In the English language we use the following words
or statements, he has made a name for himself,
denoting fame or accomplishment or he ruined my
name, implying defamation. Stop in the name of the
Queen revealing the authority of the queen.
By mentioning someone’s name you picture
everything about that person, who they are, what
they do, their character, every facet of their lives is
displayed in your mind.
Therefore the names (Shmot,-the plural word for
Shem) of God represent everything about him, his
character, his reputation, his fame, his authority, his
power, his reliability, his love
The revelation of God has been progressive as
facets of him are gradually known, revealing aspects
of him that were not known before. He told Moses,
“I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and Jacob as God
Almighty (El-shaddai) but by my name, LORD
(YHWH), I didn’t make myself known to them.”-
Exodus 6:3

This is the name of God, God revealed his name as
YHWH to Moses in Exodus 6:3, known as the
Tetragrammaton (meaning the 4 letters). The name
has no vowels and it’s accepted pronunciation is
Yahweh or Jehovah. The name was so revered by
Jewish scribes that YHWH is replaced in text by
Adonai (my Lords) or HaShem which means “the
name.” Wherever the word LORD is found
capitalised in our English Bible it’s YHWH or Yod-
hey-Waw-hey.
The word Elohim is the plural form of the word El or
Eloah. The word is translated god and is a title
rather than a name. Joshua 22:22 demonstrates this
“The LORD, God of gods, the LORD, God of gods,”
Literally YHWH, El of Elohim, YHWH, El of Elohim
The title is ascribed to false gods as well, it’s used
for supernatural entities that dominate regions as
shown in 2Kings 1:16, where Baal-zebub is called
the “Elohim” of Ekron.
Jeremiah 10:10 is clear “But the LORD is the true
God….”
or YHWH is the true Elohim
Deuteronomy 6:4 recited as the Shema prayer
states
…the LORD our God,” or YHWH our Elohim.
Moses asked God to rst teach him his ways and
show him his glory and God replies I will cause my
goodness (God is good) to pass before you… Exodus
33:13,19

And when the Lord passes before him he proclaims
his name and declares his ways,
“The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and
gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and
faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands and
forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does
not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the
children and their children for the sin of the
parents to the third and fourth generation. Exodus
34:6,7
These are called the 13 attributes of God by Jewish
sages, and reveal him by his character, all the
names we’ll explore reveal a part or portion of who
he is. They are also called redemptive names,
contractual names (covenant), like when he
promises to heal, or provide, they also show his
attributes like when he is described as Holy.
Ehyeh-asher-Ehyeh
When Moses is commissioned to bring the children
of Jacob out of bondage he asks Yahweh, what
Elohim shall I say sent me? to which he
replies,“Ehyeh-Asher-Ehyeh,”- Exodus 3:14
Translated as “I AM WHO I AM,” but the verb asher
can also be translated I am, I was, I will be.
Ehyeh is in the rst person, I AM, I WAS, I WILL BE,
while YAHWEH is in the second person, HE IS, HE
WAS, HE WILL BE, Moses declares the self- existing
one as YAHWEH
God speaks of that name
“This is my name forever, and this is the name for
all generations to use to call upon me” – Exodus
3:15b

El-Elyon – Most High God/the
supreme one (as in Supreme Court)
The rst time Abraham meets a Priest of God and
the king of Salem called Melchizedek, He has the
revelation that the God he serves is the most High
God, the possessor and creator of the heavens and
earth Genesis 14:18-20
El-Roi- The God who sees
Hagar was mistreated by Sarai, Abraham’s wife after
she got pregnant and she ed. An Angel of God met
her and spoke to her that her son will nd favour
with God and will be called Ishmael (God hears).
She called Him God who sees.
“You are God who sees (El-Roi), for she said, have I
not even here [in the wilderness] remained alive
after seeing him [who sees me with understanding
and compassion] – Genesis 16:13
El-Shaddai- The Almighty
The is also translated or has connotations of the
God who is more than enough, the all su cient one,
the omnipotent God, the many breasted one Gen
17:1
El-Olam – Everlasting God, the eternal
one, God of the universe, the God of
ancient days.

Strongs 5769 states that the word “Olam” is related Jehovah/Yahweh is the covenant name of the Lord
to the Hebrew word “Alam” which means concealed that he is our provider, Yahweh or Jehovah is his

awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe

The new covenant expresses all these covenant
promises, Jesus is our peace, healer, our
righteousness, our shepherd, he is Emmanuel, but
the new covenant calls us sons and daughters of
God.

The word Pantokrator is the Greek translation of the

Jehovah Nissi – The Lord my victor, Hebrew Saboath (see 2 Cor 6:18 and 1 Sam 7:8,14) is

17:15 Corinthians and 8 times in Revelation. It is
translated Almighty and speaks of God’s
omnipotence (ruler, sustainer of all).

Referring to Jesus as our Head, our Lord, master, Inserting what is in the Hebrew

Isaiah 12:2 is a fascinating verse it uses the
shortened form of the name of our God,
Yah or Jah. We frequently using the word in the
word Hallelujah or Praise Jah.
Behold, El YESHUA, I will trust and not be afraid for
YAH YAHWEH is my strength and my song, he also is
become YESHUA
