-Strategic human resource management (SHRM) involves the tactics or set of HR programs or

actions that help address and solve business problems and directly contribute to achieving the
organization’s strategic goals on short-term or long-term basis. The CIPD furthers this definition
of Strategic HRM by stating that its “all those activities affecting the behaviour of individuals in
their efforts to formulate and implement the strategic needs of the business.” [CITATION CIP21 \l
1033 ]. In a nutshell, SHRM aligns HR practices with organizational strategic goals.

Unlike many businesses and industries, drug manufacturing giant Square Pharmaceuticals
Ltd has reported a 12 percent growth in its sales in the third quarter of the 2019-20 financial year
[CITATION TBS20 \l 1033 ]. With the increasing demand, their sales revenue has risen due to the
current pandemic situation which is why they are planning for expansion rather than cutting cost.
In order to produce Oral Solid Dosage drugs, the pharmaceutical giant decided to create a
subsidiary business, called Square Lifesciences Ltd, for Tk350 crore. Square Pharma anticipated
the completion of the project by June 2023 [ CITATION Ahs20 \l 1033 ]. In the face of the growing
demand for medicines, Square Pharmaceuticals intends to contribute Tk.250 crore in the
expansion of its business. At a board meeting, the drugmaker planned to use the asset for
Balancing, Modernization, Rehabilitation, and Expansion (BMRE) as well as to buy machinery
and land[CITATION Squ20 \l 1033 ]. In this pandemic situation, to shape their recent strategic goal
of expansion they are exerting strategic human resource management with a cautious measure.
Companies have shifted to a remote work model at a scale and magnitude they have never
observed to deter the spread of the coronavirus. When face-to-face collaboration is substituted by
e-mail and video conferencing, in different and challenging conditions, HR managers have to do
a thorough and difficult job. They are currently adapting their hiring processes online to facilitate
remote changes. If their business is growing, then their employees should be too. They are
constantly holding training and development programs for their employees to ensure that they
have the skills required for approaching an increasingly digitized workplace besides to facilitate
their recent plan of modernization. Moreover, they have systematic in-house training for
employees at home and abroad. They are exercising their HR functions including performance
appraisal and compensation system along with recruitment, selection, and training to support and
shape their strategic plans in the current situation.
Square Pharmaceuticals believes and practices the ideals of corporate work with a classic
confluence of productivity and equity with its progressive business outlook. They believe in
business growth by raising the degree of employee productivity. Square values efficiency and
