Preface
The Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT) is the National Normalization Forum. Brazilian Rules,
which content is responsibility of the Brazilian Committees (ABNT/CB), Sectorial Normalization Bodies
(ABNT/ONS), and Temporary Special Study Commissions (ABNT/CEET), are elaborated by Study
Commissions (CE) formed by representatives of the involved sectors, consisting in: producers, consumers, and
neutrals (universities, laboratories, and others).
ABNT NBR 8130 was elaborated in the Brazilian Committee on Fuels (ABNT/CB-09), by the Study Commission
on Heating Machines (CE-09:601.01). The Project got around in Public Consultation, according to
Announcement no. 10, from 10/31/1996, with number NBR Project 8130. Its Amendment Project 1 got around in
Public Consultation, according to Announcement no. 11, from 11/28/2003.
This second edition incorporates Amendment 1, from 06/30/2004, and cancels and substitutes the previous
edition (ABNT NBR 8130:1998).
This Rule contains Annex A, with normative content.
1 Objective
This rule specifies the minimal exigible features and prescribes test conditions and the methodology used for
instantaneous water heaters, wherein gaseous fuels are used.
2 Normative references
The rules listed below contain provisions that, when cited in this text, constitute prescriptions for that Rule. The
indicated editions were in effect by the time of this publication. As every rule is subjected to review, it is
recommended that those to make agreements based on this rule verify the convenience of using more recent
editions of the rules cited below. ABNT has information on the rules in effect in a given time.

3 Definitions
The definitions from ABNT NBR 5899 are applied for this Rule.
4 Requirements
4.1 Classification
Heaters are classified according to their nominal strength, according to table 1.
Table 1 - Classification of water heaters by nominal strength
When the pilot ignition is done by a manual activation device, it must be also possible to ignite it without using
this device.
4.4.1.5 The ignition system by the pilot flame or other device must provide ignition safety for the main burner,
even that the hot water exit is rapidly opened or closed at short intervals.
4.4.1.6 Control, regulation, and safety devices must be accessible, easily handled, and distributed in order to
prevent non-voluntary activation.
4.4.1.7 The possibility of non-voluntary deregulation of any outflow or gas pressure regulation device by the
user must be prevented with the placement of a seal or other proper protection means.
4.4.1.8 The line valve must be positioned in order to facilitate its handling.
4.4.1.9 It is mandatory that the run set is complemented according to what is provided in ABNT NBR 13103 in
order to remove the combustion products from the environment where the heater is installed in.
4.4.1.10 A water heater that can be convertible from a gas family to another must be converted with pieces set
and supplied by the manufacturer or by technical solutions developed by qualified professionals and accepted
by the gas distribution companies after tests in their laboratories according to this Rule.
o

composition.
5.3 Procedure
a) Wobbe rate can range in 2% related to the value indicated in table A.1;
b) gases used to compose mixtures (test gases) must present at least the following purity degrees:
nitrogen: 99%;
hydrogen: 99%;
propene: 90%;
methane: 95%;
propane: 95%;
butane: 95%;
NOTE: For hydrocarbons, H2, CO, and O2 contents must be lower than 1% and N2 and CO2 contents must be
lower than 2%.
c) a mixture can be made from a certain gas that already has convenient proportions and several elements
of the final mixture, provided that this mixture presents physical properties (Wobbe rate and relative
density) similar to the ones obtained from elements complying with the previous condition.
In practice, the values obtained during the tests do not correspond to those reference conditions, and are then
corrected, leading to the values that could be obtained if the standard conditions existed at the injector exit
during the test.
The volumetric outflow is corrected by the following equation:
where:
V0 is the volumetric outflow at reference conditions, in cubic meters per hour;
V is the volumetric outflow obtained at humidity, temperature, and pressure conditions at the gas
consumption meter, in cubic meters per hour;
Pa is the atmospheric pressure, in kilopascals;
P is the gas feeding pressure at the consumption meter, in kilopascals;
Tg is the gas temperature obtained at the gas consumption meter, in Celsius degrees;
D is the density of dry or humid test gas, related to dry air;
dr is the density of dry reference gas related to dry air, according to table A.1.
If a humid meter or saturated gas is used, d (density of dry gas related to dry air) value must be replaced with
the value of density d, given by the following equation:
where:
W is the water steam pressure, in kilopascals, at temperature Tg
where:
e = Neper number.
where:
(CO)N is neutral carbon monoxide;
(CO)M is measured carbon monoxide;
(CO2)N is neutral carbon dioxide;
(CO2)M is measured carbon dioxide.
(CO2)N values for the test gases are shown in table 3.

5.3.5.2 The room temperature in the standard compartment must be between 20 C and 25 C.
5.3.5.3 The outflow is determined by the average value of three measurements. The heater must be adjusted to
o o
temperature raises between 20 C and 22 C, and the cold water that feeds the heater must be at a temperature
o o
between 20 C and 25 C.
5.3.5.4 After the stabilization of entrance and exit water temperatures is reached, start to measure the gas and
water consumption and, immediately after, the temperatures of cold and hot water must be recorded.
5.3.5.5 The output is calculated by the equation:
where:
n is the output, in percentage;
ma is the water mass obtained during the measurement period, in kilograms;
-3
C is the water specific heat, in kilojoules per kilogram per Celsius degree, equal to 4.1868 x 10 ;
T1 is the water temperature in the entrance, in Celsius degrees;
T2 is the water temperature in the exit, in Celsius degrees;
o
V0 is the gas consumption during the measurement period, in cubic meters, normalized at 15 C and
101.33 kPa;
o
PCS is the superior calorific power, in megajoules per cubic meter of gas used at 15 C and 101.33 kPa.
o
The correction of the gas volume for the conditions of the superior calorific power (15 C and 101.33 kPa (760
mm Hg), dry) is given by the following equation:
where:
o
V0 is the gas volume, in cubic meters, normalized at 15 C and 101.33 kPa;
Vmed is the measured gas volume, in cubic meters, at the test conditions;
Pa is the barometric pressure, in kilopascals;
P is the gas feeding pressure in the meter, in kilopascals;
W is the water steam pressure, related to Tg, if a humid gas consumption meter is used;
Tg is the gas temperature in Celsius degrees, obtained in the gas consumption meter.
The nominal strength in kilowatts at the test conditions (proper for the output) is given by the equation:
Pne = 0.278Vne x PCS
Where:
o
Vne is the nominal gas output at the conditions of the superior calorific power (15 C and 101.33 kPa (760
mm Hg), dry), in cubic meters per hour;
o
PCS is the calorific power of the used gas, in megajoules per cubic meter, 15 C, and 101.33 kPa.
