Crochet Rag Doll Bear
Crochet Rag Doll Bear
Measurements:
About 15.5 inches (38-40cm) tall,
the head diameter is 4 inches
(10cm), made from 100% Acrylic
Worsted Weight yarn –
“Impeccable Loops & Threads”,
“Red Heart” and “Vanna’s Choice”
© 2016 Elena's Times – Crochet Toys Patterns – Rag doll Bear – British/UK terms
Crochet hook: I used 2 crochet hooks: 3.75 mm ( USA – F-5) for the bear and 4.25 mm ( USA – G-6)
for the jumpsuit and scarf, for Worsted Weight yarn. You might want to use different hook – everyone's
style is different.
Tension:
17-18 dc sts in 2.5 inches (10cm) for Worsted Weight Yarn.
The tension is not essential for this pattern; I give it for reference; the goal is to make stitches tight
enough, so the filling does not show through the stitches.
I recommend that you make a sample before starting the toy itself: you get to practice and find out your
gauge.
ABBREVIATIONS
Rnd(s) = round(s) yo = yarn over st(s) = stitch(es)
ch = chain stitch sl st = slip stitch
dc = double crochet htr = half treble crochet tr = treble crochet
dec = stitch decrease inc = stitch increase tr2tog = crochet 2 tr sts together
MC = Main Colour yarn CC = Contrasting Colour yarn
Pattern explanation:
dec (dc dec) = decrease one double crochet stitch – insert the hook in the front loop of the next stitch,
do not yarn over, insert the hook in the front loop of the next stitch (3 loops on the hook), yarn over and
draw the yarn through the first 2 loops (2 loops on the hook), yarn over and draw through both loops on
the hook. Note: sometimes it looks better when you simply miss a stitch in order to decrease. When
appears without a number, dec stands for one stitch decrease; a number after this symbol indicates how
many times decrease has to be made.
inc (dc inc) = increase one double crochet stitch – crochet two double crochet stitches in one stitch of
previous row.
The number at the end of round is the number of stitches in the round (row).
tr2tog – yarn over (YO) hook, insert hook in next stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook); YO hook,
pull through 2 loops; YO , insert hook in next st, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), YO, pull through 2
loops (3 loops on hook); YO, pull through last 3 loops. One tr2tog made (see pictures).
For example,
dc 15 means: crochet double crochet stitch in each of the next 15 stitches of previous row (round);
{ dc3, inc } x 6 (30) means: crochet one double crochet stitch in each of the next three stitches of
previous row, then increase one stitch by working two double crochet stitches in next (fourth) stitch;
repeat between { } 6 times around; the number of stitches in this round is 30.
inc x 6 means : crochet 2 double crochet stitches in each one of the next 6 stitches of the previous row.
Changing colour
To change to “new” yarn, do it when working last st in “old” colour: draw a loop with the “old” color,
tie the “new” yarn to the “old” yarn; yarn over with the “new” yarn and pull out a loop of the “new”
yarn.
Shifting the end/beginning of rounds. In several rounds stitches are added after completing those
rounds, but there is no increase in the number of stitches, this is done to shift the end of the round, for
symmetry or convenience in the stitch count.
Following the description of work, there are pictures to help you with the tricky parts

Come back to the body and crochet another 10-12 rounds of dc sts (in both loops), stuff the head and
body; fold the edges flat and sew together; or you can continue to crochet {dc1, dec} around, until
there are 6 or 7 sts left, cut the yarn, hide the end inside the body.
To make Right leg, attach CC yarn at the middle front (the first of the missed stitches of Rnd 9 ), ch2,
tr st in the same st of Rnd 9, then crochet tr sts around (39 sts in tr sts of Rnd 9 and 6 tr sts in the
unused loops of ch sts separating the legs), sl st in the first st of this round (46)
Repeat Rounds 11-20

Nose
With CC ch2, crochet all following sts in second from the hook loop:
1 dc, ch1, 1 htr, ch1, 1 dc, ch1, 1 htr, ch1, 1 dc, ch1, 1 htr, sl st in first dc, cut the yarn (leave long end
for sewing), take it out of the loop
Eyes
With CC ch2, dc6 in second loop, bring the short yarn end in front of the work (Wrong Side will be
facing up when you sew the eyes), sl st in first dc, cut the yarn, take it out of the loop
Scarf
Row 1: with White yarn, ch 56 sts, starting from the third from the hook stitch, crochet htr sts to the
end of chain
Row 2: ch2, turn, crochet htr sts in loops just below the front loops to the end of row (see pictures)
Row 3-5: repeat Row 2; cut the yarn, take it out of the loop, weave in the end
The pictures below show the most difficult points of the crochet process.
To begin the head: Make the first loop from the short side of the string, ch2 and crochet 6 dc sts in the
first loop (which is second loop from the hook); after that continue to work in the round: crochet first st
of the second round in the first st of the first round
To begin the foot: ch5, starting from the second (from the hook) loop, crochet dc st in next 2 ch sts,
insert the hook leaving only one loop in front of the hook (left picture); turn clockwise and crochet on
the other side of the chain (middle picture); continue to crochet in the round, so the first st of Rnd 2 is
above the first st of Rnd 1 (picture on the right):

The arrow shows where to insert the hook for the first stitch of Round 3; this is the stitch where you
change to Main Colour yarn: draw a loop with CC yarn, tie MC yarn to CC yarn; yarn over with MC
yarn and pull out a loop of MC yarn.
The first round of the jumpsuit and ruffle above it is made the same way: hold the toy upside down,
attach CC yarn at first front loop, ch1, dc st in same front loop:
sl st in the 1st st of this round; for the second round of the ruffle: ch4, miss next st of Rnd 1, dc in next
st

sl st in 1st ch st of this round; on the right – crochet several rounds under the jumpsuit:
Connecting rounds of the jumpsuit: sl st in the first tr st of same round ; ch2, tr st in the same stitch
(picture on the left); to begin Left leg, ch6 (picture on the right):
miss 40 sts of Rnd 9, sl st in the next st, ch2, tr st in the same st of Rnd 9:

To begin Right leg, attach CC yarn at the middle front (the first of the missed stitches of Rnd 9), ch2,
tr st in the same st of Rnd 9 (picture on the right); the arrow points at the sl st that connects the rounds,
miss this stitch and insert the hook in next st (in the first of the 6 chain stitches between the legs)
To make tr2tog – yarn over (YO) hook, insert hook in next stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook);
YO hook, pull through 2 loops; YO , insert the hook in next st, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), YO,
pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook); YO, pull through last 3 loops

Making the scarf. The arrow points at one of the front loops where to insert the hook for stitches of the
second row:
For the flower, ch4, connect into circle by sl st in the first ch st; ch3, sl st in the middle of the circle,
ch3, sl st in the middle… make 5 petals , cut the yarn, take it out of the loop, tie both ends together, use
them to tie the flower to the scarf
Sew on one part of the press stud on the other side of the flower, wrap the scarf around the neck to
determine the position for the other part of the press stud

The bear in the gray jumpsuit can not sit,
because I wanted to make a rag doll type
toy, with little stuffing in the body or no
stuffing at all; so for the gray bear I have
not crocheted the extension of the body – I
went straight to the jumpsuit.
