Once upon a time, there was an old goat, who had seven children.
One day, she wanted to go into the forest to get some food.
. You all stay here – but beware of the wolf, don't let him come in, or he'll gobble you up!
but you'll be able to tell it's him from his rough voice and his black paws.
" Then off the mother goat went. A short while later, the little goats heard a knock at the door
. A voice said: "Open up, dear children! It's me, your mother,
" But the little goats knew from the rough voice that it was the wolf, and they said:
"You're not our mother. She has a sweet and lovely voice.
" So off the wolf went to the shop, where he bought himself a big stick of chalk.
He ate the chalk, which made his voice turn light and sweet.
Then he went back to the house, knocked on the door again and said:
"Open up, dear children! It's me, your mother, and I've brought something back for each of you."
But the Wolf had laid his black paws against the window, and the little goats cried: "
We will not open up! Our mother doesn't have black feet like you do. You're the wolf!"
Upon hearing this, the wolf ran to the baker and said: "Spread dough over my paw!"
Then he went to the miller and demanded: "Spread white flour over my paws!"
The miller was suspicious, however – he had a feeling the wolf was planning something wicked.
the wolf threatened him and told him he would eat him up if he didn't obey.
This frightened the miller very much, and so he spread flour over the wolf's paws.
The wolf went to the little goats' house for a third time, knocked on the door and said:
Your dear mother has come home and has brought something back for each of you.
"Show us your paws first, so we know that you really are our mother!"
So the wolf laid his white paws on the window, and the little goats opened the door.
When they saw that it was the wolf, the little goats were absolutely terrified,
and they ran away as fast as they could to find somewhere to hide.
