DURATION: 1Hour and 15 Minutes

1a. State the direction of the resultant force on the ball. [1 mark]

It will move towards the centre of the circle.

1b. On the diagram, construct an arrow of the correct length to represent the weight of the
ball. [2 marks]
1c. Show that the magnitude of the net force F on the ball is given by the following equation. [3
marks]

1d. The radius of the bowl is 8.0 m and θ = 22°. Determine the speed of the ball. [4 marks]
[Total: 10]

2a. Determine the orbital period for the satellite. [3 marks]

2b. A planet orbits the Sun in a circular orbit with orbital period T and orbital radius R. The
mass of the Sun is M. [4 marks]

3 In a copper wire the number of conduction electrons is equal to the number of copper atoms
in the wire.
(a) State what is meant by conduction electrons. [1 mark]

The set of electron orbitals, generally the outermost shells of the atoms in a conductor or semiconductor,
in which electrons are free to move and thereby carry an electric current.
[2 marks]

(B) (i) 8.93x10^6/64 = 1.40x10^5 mol

(b) (ii) (1.40 x 10^5) x (6.02x10^23) = 8.43 x 10^28

[1 mark]

(d) An electric field is established inside the copper wire directed as shown in the diagram
below. The dots represent electrons. The random velocities of the electrons are not shown.
On the diagram below, draw an arrow to indicate the direction of the drift velocity
of the electrons

4 A longitudinal wave is travelling in a medium from left to right. The graph shows the
variation with distance x of the displacement y of the particles in the medium. The solid line
and the dotted line show the displacement at t=0 and t=0.882 ms, respectively.

The period of the wave is greater than 0.882 ms. A displacement to the right of the
equilibrium position is positive.

4a State what is meant by a longitudinal travelling wave. [1mark]

A longitudinal travelling wave is a wave where the displacement of particles vibrations is parallel

to the direction of energy transfer.

4b. Calculate, for this wave, [4marks]
(i) the speed.
340 m/s

(ii) the frequency.

4c. The equilibrium position of a particle in the medium is at x=0.80 m. For this particle at
t=0, state and explain

(i) the direction of motion.

Over time, the displacement of the particle will eventually decrease.

(ii) whether the particle is at the centre of a compression or a rarefaction. [4 marks]

The particle is at the centre of rarefaction because the molecules on either side of the particle will
move in appropriate directions, the particles on the left will travel to the left, while the particles on the
right will travel to the right.

Coulomb's law states that the force between the particles depends on the size of the individual charges
and the square of the distance between them.

5d The diagram below shows two point charges of +4.0 nC and +6.0 nC which are 68
mm apart.

(i)Calculate the magnitude of the electrostatic [2 marks]

force acting on the +4.0 nC charge.
(ii) Calculate the magnitude of the resultant electric field strength at the mid-point of
the line joining the two charges in the diagram above.

State an appropriate unit for your answer. [2 marks]
