Reading and Writing in Typography - Tips and Tricks

Typography is commonly used now days and will very often be seen on any

advertisements or articles. This is a tactic used to make the subject more visually appealing and

contrast from the rest of article. It can represent a brand or symbol that will register in the readers

head either consciously or unconsciously. Using typography when presenting information helps

to draw in the reader and spark interest. This is a very important skill set used especially in

graphic design. In the article Why Is Typography Important in Graphic Design it states “ It

requires both strategy and a good eye for visual aesthetics.” This skill set enables the writer to

take their work to a higher level.

First you must truly understand the subject itself then begin to look at it from other points

of views. There are the points of views of people experiencing depression and anxiety

themselves, and then there are those who know and watch others going through it everyday.

Another article called The Links between Creativity and Depression - Eye on Design it says

“Depression’s bedfellow, mania, is also anecdotally linked to heightened creativity and output.”

Saying to put yourself in the shoes of the viewer and how they feel then to put it into a design.

Commonly, emotions and mental health are a more uncomfortable and difficult subject to

discuss so it is usually expressed more in music and art. Afterall, a picture is worth a thousand

words. When it is to hard to try to find the words to truly describe something typography can be

used to try to express it that way. Using digit designs and images that will stick in your mind. In
the article Mental Disorders as Typography the author describes it as “ catching the essence of a

mental disorder through Typography.” It is being able to express a subject through another

“language”.
