Safety + Astronomy
Safety + Astronomy
In the early years of space exploration, scientists didn’t know what kind of effect traveling in space
would have on human beings. So both the Soviets and the American missions started out by sending
animals, to make sure that they would live. There have been many types of animals sent out in space
missions, from monkeys, to cats, dogs and even some of the strangest animals you could think of in space.
In 1947, the United States sent the V2 rocket into suborbital space and onboard were a collection of
fruit flies. This would be considered the very first animal sent into space. By 1948, the U.S. decided to send
the next V2 rocket and they included a Rhesus monkey, by the name of Albert I. In 1957, the Soviets sent
Laika the dog into space, followed by ten more dogs, until they finally made the decision to send a human.
Both the United States and the Soviet Union were, at that time, the only two countries involved in
these kinds of space experiments. Both countries sent chimpanzees, monkeys, mice, frogs, cats, spiders and a
tortoise into space. There was a lot of competition between the two countries and as America would send
one animal up, the Soviets would keep track and make their own decisions based on the success of the U.S.
As the space race continued, there was very little in the news about animals in space, with the
exception of one of the last flights of the Apollo mission. On Skylab 3 two spiders, named Arabella and
Anita successfully spun spider webs in space. After that time, it was shown that people could make the trip
and exist in zero gravity. Due to the results found in these missions, future space trips included exercise for
the astronauts, to keep their muscles in shape and specially designed ways for food and water access.

Venus is the second planet from the sun and is the second brightest object in the night sky after the moon.
Venus is the second largest terrestrial planet and is sometimes referred to as the Earth’s sister planet due to their
similar size and mass. The surface of the planet is obscured by an opaque layer of clouds made of sulfuric acid.
It takes 243 Earth days to rotate once on its ascis. The planet’s orbit around the sun takes 225 Earth days
compared to the Earth’s 365. The Earth and Venus are very similar in size with only a 638km difference in diameter.
Venus having 81.5% of the Earth’s mass. Both also have a central core, a molten mantle and a crust. While its size and
mass are similar to Earth, the small asteroids are crashed when entering its atmosphere, meaning no small craters lie
on the surface of the planet. The pressure felt by a human on the surface would be equivalent to that experienced deep
beneath the sea on Earth. The average surface temperature is 462 °C, and because Venus does not tilt on its axis, there
is no seasonal variation. The dense atmosphere of around 96.5 percent carbon dioxide traps heat and causes a
greenhouse effect.
The Venera 1 space probe was launched in 1961, but lost contact with base. The USA also lost their first probe
to Venus, Mariner 1, although Mariner 2 was able to take measurements of the planet in 1962. The Soviet Union’s
Venera 3 was the first man-made craft to land on Venus in 1966.The dense clouds of sulphuric acid surrounding
Venus make it impossible to view its surface from outside its atmosphere. It was only when radio mapping was
developed in the 1960s that scientists were able to observe and measure the extreme temperatures and hostile
environment. It is thought Venus did once have oceans but these evaporated as the planets temperature increased.
