 1. Tema

Tema atau ide adalah inti atau tema dasar dari sebuah cerita hikayat. Ide atau tema
hikayat biasanya didapat dari kisah-kisah aktual yang terjadi di masa itu atau juga bisa
bersumber dari berbagai kitab keagamaan dan sumber-sumber lainnya. Setelah tema
ditentukan, pengarang bisa mengembangkan tema atau ide tersebut melalui penokohan,
alur, serta unsur-unsur intrinsik lainnya.

2. Sifat atau Watak
Tokoh atau pelaku dalam cerita memiliki sifat atau watak
sebagaimana orang pada umumnya.
Contoh :
• Protagonis (baik)
• Antagonis (jahat)

Yaitu cara pengarang menggambarkan watak tokoh, yakni secara langsung (analitik) dan
tak langsung (dramatik). Secara dramatik misalnya, melalui dialog antartokoh, perilaku
tokoh, pandangan tokoh lain, dan pikiran tokoh
