Introducing the Ohio® CarePlus® Servo-controlled Humidifier Accessory....................................... 1-1

Description............................................................................................................................................................. 1-2

Introducing the Ohio Care Plus Servo-controlled

Humidifier Accessory
Thank you for selecting the Ohio Care Plus Servo-controlled Humidifier accessory. The
Care Plus Humidifier provides an efficient supply of humidified air to help meet your
patient’s thermoregulatory needs by reducing convective and evaporative heat loss.

With a series of operator prompts, quiet operation, and an easily accessible humidifier
fill tray, the Care Plus Servo-controlled humidifier offers both security and convenience.
It easily integrates into the new or previous versions of the Care Plus. The familiar
control panel, similar in styling and function to the Care Plus Incubator, allows
easyselection of humidity levels.

The Care Plus Servo-controlled Humidifier augments the thermal efficiency of the Care
Plus incubator to stabilize patient temperature:
• The controller responds immediately to humidity changes, minimizing the humidity
fluctuations of passive humidity incubator systems.

• The efficient and uniform humidification of air entering the incubator infant
compartment reduces evaporative heat loss of the patient and helps to reduce
patient Insensible Water Loss (IWL).

WARNING Before using the Ohio Care Plus Servo-controlled Humidifier accessory, read
through this entire manual. As with all medical equipment, attempting to use
this device without a thorough understanding of its operation may result
in patient or user injury. This device should only be operated by personnel
trained in its operation and under the direction of medical personnel familiar
with the risks and benefits of this type of device.

1/Introduction
Description
The Ohio Care Plus Servo-controlled Humidifier uses a heating element in a water
tray under the incubator to provide humidification. An electronic controller adjacent
to the water tray uses a microprocessor to control the heating element. The heating
element produces warm water vapor and opens a valve that releases that vapor into
the incubator patient chamber.

The desired humidity level is entered on a control panel on the front of the humidifier.
The controller compares relative humidity readings from a sensor located inside the
patient chamber of the incubator to this set humidity, and regulates the heater and
valve to maintain the desired humidity.

The humidifier servo-control

The Care Plus Servo-controlled Humidifier adjusts humidity output to achieve a
desired humidity level. The desired humidity level, which appears in the display on the
front of the humidifier, can be adjusted using the humidity switches (? and M).

The controller compares the humidity display value to the control humidity setting. A
microprocessor regulates the heater, which adjusts the valve in the opening to provide
the desired humidity level.

Control Humidity Range

After you press the enable button, the controller lets you enter humidity control values
from 40 to 85% RH using the humidity switches ( ? and M).

Silencing a prompt

The system failure prompt cannot be silenced. The low water level prompt can be
silenced by sliding out the humidifier fill tray.

System fail

A system failure automatically shuts off the heater and triggers a continuous tone when
an electrical failure is detected. During a system failure, the system fail indicator lights
and a tone sounds. The following conditions trigger a system failure:
• A disconnected, open or short circuit in the humidifier sensor.
• An open circuit on the heater.
• A controller malfunction

Auto Shutoff/Add Water

The Auto Shutoff/Add Water prompt automatically shuts off the heater. These
conditions trigger a Auto Shutoff/Add water prompt:
• The water level is low in the humidifier fill tray. The prompt tone can be silenced by
sliding out the fill tray, but the indicator stays lit and the RH display flashes. If there
is still no water in the tray when it is replaced, the prompt tone will start sounding
again within a few minutes.
• The humidifier fill tray is not fully inserted. Only the indicator will light; no tone will
sound. Power to the heater is disrupted until the tray is fully inserted.

Note: If the Auto Shutoff/Add Water prompt sounds and the fill tray is removed and
then replaced without water in it, there is a 30 second delay before the prompt sounds
again.

Note: This is not an instantaneous prompt. There will be a delay of no more than
20 minutes before the prompt sounds even when the fill tray is dry.

Basic operation procedure................................................................................................................................ 4-1

WARNING: Complete the “Checkout” section of this manual before putting the unit into
operation. If the humidifier fails any portion of the checkout procedure it must be
removed from use and repaired.

Basic operating procedure

WARNING: The fill tray and lid must be installed for proper incubator operation, even if you do
not plan to use the humidifier.

CAUTION: w Do not fill the humidifier past the fill level. Overfilling reduces humidification.

The Care Plus incubator should be on and operating while the Servo-Controlled
Humidifier is operation. For set up, checkout and operation of the Care Plus incubator
refer to the incubator’s Operation and Maintenance manual.

The servo-controlled Humidifier fill tray holds enough water to last for approximately
10 hours. Overfilling the tray will actually decrease humidification.

1. Gently slide the fill tray out of the base until you see the first hole in the tray cover.
You will feel an initial resistance. Apply a steady pull.

2. Add water until it reaches the fill line on the front of the tray (1000 mil maximum).

3. Slide the tray all the way back into the base until the Auto Shutoff/Add water
indicator goes out and the display stops blinking.

4. Select a humidity setting by using the humidity switches (? and M).

5. Empty the tray when the humidifier is not in use. Disinfect the humidifier weekly
or after each patient. Refer to the section “Cleaning and disinfecting individual
components” in section 5 for disinfection instructions.

6/Service
The following sections describe, in detail, the functions of each circuit on the printed
circuit board. General design practices were followed to attenuate the EMI/RFI noise.
On all signal lines traveling into or out of the control portion of the printed circuit
board, ferrite bead and capacitors are installed. These devices do not readily affect the
operation of the board and are not discussed in the functional description.

Power Supply
The transformer T1 steps the line voltage down to typically 11V~ under normal load.
In the 120V~ option, the jumpers JP9 and JP10 are installed; in the 230V~ option,
the jumper JP8 is installed. There are fuses F3 and F4 to protect the transformer,
and a fuse F1 to protect the rest of the circuit. The output of the transformer is full-
wave rectified by the bridge rectifier D1, and filtered by capacitors C1 and C2. The
zener diode D11 and resistor R45 supply a stable 9.1 VDC to the circuit. The voltage
regulator U1 provides 5 VDC to the circuit. The capacitor C3 is used to filter the output
voltage and keep the regulator from oscillating.

Microcontroller
The 87C550 microcontroller U4 includes a one-time programmable EPROM. The
crystal speed is 7.3728MHz. This yields a clock frequency of 1.2288MHz, or one
sixth of the crystal frequency. This can be read from the ALE/P line (pin 30) on the
microcontroller. The capacitor C47 ensures that the microcontroller is held in reset until
the voltage supply has stabilized. The port designations are located in the table on the
first page.

Humidity Sensor
The HyCal humidity sensor requires an excitation voltage of 5VDC and will produce
a voltage output directly proportional to the percent of relative humidity (0.8V - 3.9V).
The following equation shows this linear relationship.

    Vout = 0.8V + (0.031x %RH)

The microcontroller determines the actual connection of the sensor to the printed
circuit board. Pins 1 and 6 are shorted together on the sensor side of connector J3.
The microcontroller senses this short via the P3.1 (pin 11) line. When the sensor is
connected, that line is a low logic level; when the sensor is disconnected, that line is
a high logic level. P3.1 is internally pulled high by the microcontroller.

Humidity Circuit
The signal from the humidity sensor is applied to a voltage follower U3A with very low
input noise and bias current characteristics, because of the high output impedance
of the sensor. This follower has unity gain. The diodes D6 and D7 protect the circuit
and sensor from electrostatic discharge (ESD), while diode D4 protects the circuit and
sensor from over-voltage. The RC network of C25 and R11 provide a low pass filter for
the sensor output signal. Resistor R57 is a pull-up resistor to lift the input signal to 5V if
the sensor is disconnected.

6/Service
The op-amp U3B is used to adjust the circuit for offset. This is the sensor (and circuit)
calibration. The potentiometer R30, one half of the voltage divider (R30/R20+R30), is
adjusted to calibrate the unit. The adjustability of this divider circuit is 0V to 4.85V.
The op-amp U3C is used to add 650mV to the sensor signal. The op-amp U3D is
configured as a differential amplifier combining the previous three op-amp outputs in
the following equation.

   U3D = U3A + U3C - U3B

This resulting signal is read by the A/D converter.

Analog-to-Digital Converter
There are six A/D channels located on the microcontroller. The A/D converter requires a
reference voltage (VREF+ line, pin 1). This line is connected to the 5V net. The sensor, the
voltage dividers, and the A/D are all referenced to the same voltage; thus, there can be
no errors due to reference voltage variations. The A/D VREF- line is connected to the
ground plane, which provides immunity from variations on the ground plane.

Channel 0 of the A/D is the sensor voltage. Channel 1 is the signal from the heater
current sense circuit. Channel 2 is the result of the divider R27 and R28. This line is
used to monitor the A/D functionality. Since this signal is one half of the 5V line (which
references the A/D), the resulting digital value from the A/D should be one half of full
scale, or 7FH. Channel 3 is connected to the voltage divider of R44 and JP3.

For the present design a 100K ohm resistor is installed in JP3 and the signal should
be 2.5 volts. If future sensor changes require a different software algorithm, a
different resistor will be installed in JP3. The resulting change in voltage will allow the
microcontroller to sense what type of sensor is installed. Channel 4 and 5 are not used
and are grounded.

Watchdog Circuit
The IC labelled U5 is a retriggerable monostable multivibrator. The RC network of C40
and R21 defines the output pulse width. The output pulse width is set to approximately
1.6 seconds. The microprocessor outputs a pulse from P0.1 (pin 38), which is sensed
by pin 1 of U5. As long as the pulses occur at a time interval less than 1.6 seconds,
the output of the multivibrator (pin 13 of U5) stays at a high logic level. This output is
connected to the interrupt line of the microcontroller (INT0, pin 12), one input of U7A
(pin 1) and one input of U7D (pin 13). The microcontroller monitors the watchdog
through the INT0 line. This watchdog circuit turns off the heater through U7A and turns
on the audio alarm through U7D when its output results in a low logic level.

Microswitch Circuit
To insure proper fill tray engagement, a microswitch is installed on the back rail
assembly. This microswitch, actually two switches in series, is connected across pins
J5 pins 3 and 4. J5 pin 4 is connected to ground, while J5 pin 3 is connected to the
microswitch sense input line (pin 10 of the microcontroller).

6-5 6-5

6/Service
The microcontroller is programmed to internally pull this line high. When the fill tray
is installed this line is a low logic level; when the fill tray is removed this line is a high
logic level.

Safety Relay Circuit

Relay S2 is a mechanical relay that disconnects the neutral line from the heater if
the watchdog times out or when the fill tray is removed from the humidifier. The main
control of the safety relay is a NAND gate output U7A. One input (pin 1) of U7A is
directly connected to the watchdog circuit. The other input (pin 2) of U7A is connected
to pin 2 of J5.

The fill tray assembly shorts pins 1 and 2 of J5. J5 (pin 1) is pulled high by resistor
network R47 (pin 4). When the tray assembly is properly installed, pin 2 of U7A is
pulled high. When the tray assembly is removed or improperly installed, pin 2 of U7A
is pulled low. The resistor R46 is used to insure the signal line is low when the tray
assembly is removed. The NAND gate U7B is configured as an inverter. One input
(pin 5) is tied to 5 v the other input (pin 4) is connected to the output of U7A (pin 3).
The output (pin 6) of U7B drives transistor Q2 and its associated biasing network.

Q2 is a darlington transistor used as a switch to energize relay coil S2. Resistor R1

sets the base biasing current and resistor R2 is used to ensure the transistor turns off.
The diode D5 is installed to protect Q2 from over-voltage during field collapse of the
relay coil.

Audio Prompt Circuit

The audio transducer SP1 produces a tone at 2200 ± 300 Hz. The capacitor C23 is
used suppress the frequency oscillations generated by the audio transducer. Resistor
R56 controls the output volume of the audio transducer.

The audio transducer is controlled by transistor Q3. Q3 is a darlington transistor which

is used as a switch. Resistor R7 set the base biasing current, and resistor R8 is used
to insure the transistor turns off. One input of NAND gate U7D (pin 13) is connected to
the output of the watchdog circuit. The other input of U7D (pin 12) is tied high through
resistor pack R47 (pin 1) and is connected to P0.0 (pin 39) of the microcontroller. With
both inputs of U7D at a high logic level (normal output of watchdog is high), the output
will be low and the audio transducer will be off. If either or both inputs of U7D go to
a low logic level, the output will be high, and the audio transducer will turn on. This
allows both the watchdog circuit and the microcontroller to independently turn on the
audio transducer.

Solid State Relay Circuit

The solid state relay (SSR) S1 control line is pulled high through resistor pack R47
(pin 3). Port P0.2 (pin 37) of the microcontroller is used to control the SSR. A high logic
level output of port P0.2 will turn on the SSR and allow the heat to turn on; a low logic
level output of port P0.2 will turn the heat off.

Q1 is used as a switch to turn S1 on and off. Resistor R3 sets the base biasing current
and R4 is used to ensure the transistor turns off. The SSR is a zero referencing solid
state relay to minimize surges and transients during power switching of the relay. Pin
3 of the SSR is connected to the 5 volt line; pin 4 is connected to the collector of Q1.
When Q1 turns on, the SSR will conduct between its pins 1 and 2 when the signal
at pins 1 and 2 cross the zero voltage point. When Q1 turns off, the SSR will stop
conduction between its pins 1 and 2 when the signal at pins 1 and 2 cross the zero
voltage point. RV1 is MOV used to protect the output of the SSR from high voltage
noise.

Heater Current Sense Circuit
The heater current sense circuit consists of L27, JP1, D3, and R6. Alternating current
through JP1, which is the heater current line, generates an alternating current in
inductor L27. The current from L27 is half wave rectified by diode D3 and applied to
load R6. For 115V~ applications, the voltage at R6 is approximately 600 mV. For
230V~ applications, the voltage at R6 is approximately 300 mV. The voltage across
R6 is applied to ADC1 (pin 4 of the microcontroller).

Add Water Circuit

Understanding the add water circuit assumes a working knowledge of the heater circuit.
The heater circuit consists of a heater in series with a non-resettable thermal fuse and
a resettable thermostat (refer to wiring diagram drawing number 6600-1820-100). The
thermostat is designed to open prior (at a lower temperature) to the thermal fuse
opening. As the water level decreases, the temperature of the heat sink increases.
This process will occur until the setting of thermostat is reached. When the thermostat
opens, the microcontroller will sense no current via the Heater Current Sense Circuit.

In order to confirm that the thermostat opened (as opposed to the thermal fuse), the
microcontroller has another sense input, P3.7 (pin 17). This sense circuit consists
of R64, R9, U2. One side of the opto-isolator, U2, pin 1, is connected to phase side,
through R64 and R9, of the AC line. Resistors R64 and R9 limit the amount of current
through U2. The other side of U2, pin 2, is connected to the junction of the thermal
fuse and the thermostat.

Under normal conditions, the thermostat is closed, completing the AC circuit. During
the positive half cycle, current flows through R64, R9, internal diode of U2, and the
thermostat. When the internal diode of U2 is forward biased, the output transistor is
turned on, causing the P3.7 sense line to be pulled low. When the internal diode of
U2 is reverse biased, the output transistor is turned off. The pull up resistor, R5, causes
the P3.7 sense line to go high. This process causes the output of U2 to pulse at the
same frequency as the AC line.

When the water is low, the thermostat opens. The AC circuit is open so no current
can flow through the input of U2. The output transistor of U2 remains off and the P3.7
sense line remains high. Diode D2 is placed across the input to the opto-isolator in the
opposite direction as the internal diode in the opto-isolator to limit the voltage across
the input of U2 to 700mV when the internal diode is reverse biased. This prevents the
opto-isolator from seeing over-voltage.

The output stage of the opto-isolator incorporates a photo diode and a linear amplifier.
Pins 5 and 6 are ground and Vcc, respectively, for the amplifier.

The final output stage (pin 4) of the opto-isolator is configured as an open collector.
The output (pin 4) of U2 is connected directly to the P3.7 line (pin 17) of the
microcontroller. The line is pulled high by R5 to provide proper signal levels.

Membrane Switch Panel Circuit
The touch panel is connected to the control board through connector J6. The touch
panel switches the signal lines to ground when the button is depressed. The signal
lines are connected directly to the microcontroller. The resistance of the switch is less
than 100 ohms. The microcontroller internally pulls the signal line high.

Display Circuit
Data for the displays is transmitted from port P2 of the microcontroller (P2.0-P2.7). The
control lines for the displays are transmitted from port P0 lines P0.4 through P0.7. The
control lines are pulled high by resistor pack R47 (pins 5 through 8). On the display
board, the data lines are at J2B pins 2 through 9; the control lines are at J2B pins 11,
13, 15, and 17. To insure proper noise immunity, individual grounds are run to each
latch. The ground lines are located on J2B pins 12, 14, 16, and 18. There are four octal
D-type latches, U9 through U12, which hold the data bits that light the individual LED
segments.

While the control line (pin 11 on the latches) is high, the outputs will respond to
the data on the bus. When the control line goes low, the outputs will be latched to
retain that data. Resistors R60 through R63 and capacitors C53 through C56 form a low
frequency band pass filter for the control signal. Capacitors C45, C46, C51 and C52
filter noise from the 5 volt line caused by the switching of the latches. The display
board is designed with common cathode displays so that a low signal causes the
display to light. Resistor packs R31, R32, and R33 are used to limit the current through
the LED’s.

Error Codes
E1.1  Heater Control Circuit Failure
As part of the Power Up Self Tests (PUSTs), a routine checks the function of the solid
state relay. This relay controls the heater power. The relay is turned off, and the heat
is checked using the heater current sense circuit. The heat should be off (no current).
The relay is then turned on, and the heat should be on. If this is not successful, this
error is displayed. Check resistances to the following table:

Pins Resistance If the resistance falls out side of the ranges

listed in the table, replace the heater assembly.
5 - 10 0 - 10 If the resistances are within the listed ranges,
replace the microcontroller or the printed circuit
1 - 5 350 - 440 board.

3 -5 85 - 110

E1.2  ROM Checksum Error

As part of the PUSTs, a routine performs a checksum on the ROM (code) part of the
microcontroller. This checksum merely adds each byte of the ROM to form a resulting
word. The last two bytes are excluded from this sum. It then adds the last word (two
bytes) to the checksum word, and the result should be zero. If it is not, this error is
displayed. Replace the microcontroller if this error appears.

E1.3  RAM Test Failure

As part of the PUSTs, a routine performs a RAM (data memory) test by writing and
reading various patterns to and from RAM. If any location does not pass this test, this
error is displayed. Replace the microcontroller if this error appears.

E1.4  Watchdog Circuit Failure

As part of the PUSTs, a routine tests the watchdog circuit. This circuit is a timer that
needs a pulse from the microcontroller periodically. If this pulse fails to come in to the
circuit, the circuit will interrupt the microcontroller, turn off the heat, and produce a
system failure. During this test, the microcontroller pulses the watchdog circuit and
verifies that the interrupt does not appear. It then stops pulsing the watchdog and
verifies that the interrupt does appear. If this fails, this error is displayed. Replace the
microcontroller. If the problem persists, replace the board.

E2.1  Function Execution Error

As part of the On-Line Self Tests (OLSTs), a routine tests a software variable
that is modified by the various software functions in the code. If the variable is
not the correct value, the execution of functions did not occur correctly, and
this error is displayed. Replace the microcontroller.

E2.2  Analog-to-Digital Converter Failure

As part of the OLSTs, a routine tests the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) timing. The
ADC must convert within a specific number of machine cycles on the microcontroller. If
this test fails, this error is displayed. Replace the microcontroller.

6-9 6-9
Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine
6/Service
E2.3  Membrane Keypad Failure
As part of the OLSTs, a routine tests if any of the switches on the membrane keypad
are shorted. If this occurs, this error is displayed. Replace the membrane keypad. If the
problem persists, replace the microcontroller.

E2.4  Variable Redundancy Error

As part of the OLSTs, a routine tests the redundantly stored variables. All of the critical
variables and data are stored in three places in RAM. If these three are not equal, this
error is displayed. Replace the microcontroller.

E2.5  Variable Range Error

As part of the OLSTs, a routine tests each variable (actual RH, set RH, etc.) for valid
values. If any variable has an invalid value, this error is displayed. To check the
humidity sensor, attach a voltmeter to the two-pin header, H1, on the board; positive
to pin 1 and negative to pin 2. Turn the unit on in room ambient humidity and check
that the voltmeter reads between 1.0 and 3.5v. If it falls outside this range, replace the
sensor. If it is inside this range, replace the microcontroller.

Note: This code can appear when the sensor and calibration bottle are not stabalized.
Wait 30 minutes for them to fully stabilize.

E3.1  Watchdog Time Out

The output of the watchdog circuit is an interrupt to the microcontroller. If the software
is lost or the microcontroller is malfunctioning, the watchdog will interrupt the
microcontroller. If this happens, this error is displayed.

Replace the microcontroller. If this problem persists, replace the board.

E4.1  Humidity Sensor Not Connected

On power up, a logic level on the humidity sensor connector is queried. If the sensor is
not connected to the board, this error is displayed. Connect the sensor and verify the
jumper is on the connector. If the problem persists, replace the board.

E4.2  Humidity Monitoring Circuit

On power up, the ADC reads a resistor (JP3) on the board. If this value is invalid, this
error is displayed. Replace the board.

E5.1  Calibration Voltage Error (2.5V)

As an on line test, the calibration voltage of 2.5V is measured. If this test fails, the ADC
must be in error, and the error displayed. Replace the microcontroller.

E5.2  Calibration Voltage Error (0.0V)

As an on line test, the calibration voltage of 0.0V is measured. If this test fails, the ADC
must be in error, and the error displayed. Replace the microcontroller.

E6.1  Thermal Fuse Opened (Heater Assembly Failure)

When heat is turned on, the heater current sense circuit shows the status of the
thermostat and thermal fuse. If the thermal fuse opens, this error is displayed.

Replace the heater assembly.

Sensor Calibration
1. Turn on the incubator and set the temperature to 30°C in the manual mode. Allow
temperature to stabilize.

2. Turn on the humidifier and set the humidity to 75%. Allow the humidity to stabilize.

3. Take the cap off the calibration bottle.

Important: In order for the water in the calibration bottle to be completely

saturated, most of the salt should remain undissolved. There should be as little
standing water above the salt line as possible to minimize the response time.

4. Add one half bottle cap distilled water to the bottle to cover the salt.

5. Shake the bottle to thoroughly mix the salt and water solution. Place the elbow on
the bottle. The smaller end goes over the bottle.

Note: The solution in the calibration bottle should be approximately the same
temperature as the incubator's infant chamber. If you used cold water or the
calibration bottle was in a cold environment, place the bottle in the incubator
and allow it to warm before attaching it to the humidity probe. If there is a large
temperature difference between the solution in the bottle and the humidity sensor,
a system fail prompt (E2.5) may sound.

6. Slide the elbow over the humidity sensor (mounted on the inside hood on the back
wall, it is the bottom, shorter probe) until it stops.

7. Wait 30 minutes.

8. Verify the RH display reads 75 ± 2 %. If it does not, perform steps 9, 10 and 11.
If it does, skip to step 12.

9. Loosen the two bolts at the bottom of the humidifier controller housing that secure
it to the base platform. Lower the controller housing while tilting the bottom of
the housing toward you. This will allow access to adjust the potentiometer on the
Controller/Display Board.

10. Adjust the potentiometer (R30, CALIBRATE) on the control/display board until the
RH display reads 75%.

11. Re-assemble the humidity controller to the incubator base with the two mounting
bolts.

12. Remove the calibration bottle by pulling it straight it off the humidity sensor.

13. Turn off the humidifier.

14. Perform the Electrical Safety Check and checkout procedure (section 3).

Note: The salt in the calibration bottle may only be used for a period of one year
after it's initial mix with water.

Valve Checkout
1. Pull out fill tray and verify that the valve is closed.

2. Turn on the humidifier with no water in the tray and set for 85% RH.

3. In approximately 10 minutes (no more than 20 minutes) the add water prompt
should come on.

4. After five minutes, pull out the fill tray and verify that the valve is open. Allow the
heater to cool before putting the humidifier back into service.

Note: The Add Water prompt may come on.

A.2 Servo-controlled Humidifier Installation
Important: Before installing the Servo-controlled humidifier, check the part
number of your incubator temperature compartment probe. If the part number is
not 6600-0495-70X, you must order a new temperare probe before installing
the humidifier.

1 Remove the existing humidifier fill tray by sliding it out of the incubator base platform.*

2. Remove the two screws that hold the temperature sensor housing to the back wall
of the incubator hood. Discard the old housing and shims.

3. Remove and discard the P-clip that holds the temperature sensor cable to the
back of the incubator hood.

4. Remove the air filter cover on the back of the incubator by unscrewing the two
cord wraps.

5. Install the new humidifier sensor by feeding its cable from inside the hood through
the sensor hole in the hood back wall.

6. Insert the temperature sensor through the top hole in the new sensor housing and
secure it in place with the two new shims. See Figure A-1. Attach both sensors to the
hood back wall by securing the back half of the sensor housing to the outside of the
hood with the two screws provided, taking care not to over tighten the screws.

7. Attach both sensor cables to the back base of the incubator with the new P-clip
provided.

* On older Care Plus units with the internal passive humidifier (no fill tray present), the entire base platform must be
replaced to install the servo-controlled humidifier. Order kit 6600-0107-800.

8. Route the cables around the edge of the filter cavity with the humidity sensor cable
on the inside (closest to the filter cavity) and the temperature sensor cable on
the outside. Insert the humidity sensor cable through the same hole in the base
platform that the temperature sensor cable passes through.

9. Re-install the filter cover.

10. In order to gain access to the bottom of the base platform, remove the four
mounting knobs that attach the incubator to the table top.

11. On older Care Plus units (serial numbers prior to HCB) the old passive humidifier
fill tray rails must be removed and new rails that fit the servo-controlled humidifier
must be installed. See Figure A-2
A. Remove the six mounting screws that secure the old rails to the base platform.
Remove the cable clip that secures the temperature sensor cable underneath
the base platform. Discard the old rails, mounting screws and cable clip.
B. The new rails use the same mounting holes as the old rails, but new screws and
spacers must be used. Peel the cover off the adhesive on the four spacers and
place them on the front four screw holes. Start all six new mounting screws ; two
in the back holes without any spacers and four in the front holes with spacers.
Do not tighten the screws all the way in; tighten them only about one turn.

C. To mount the new rails, fit the four front mounting screw heads through the
holes in the middle of the rail slots and slide the rails forward.

On new Care Plus units (light grey-serial numbers with HCD) rails that fit the servo-
controlled humidifier are already installed, but they must repositioned because
the lid for the new servo-controlled humidifier fill tray is thicker than the passive
humidifier tray lid.

A. Loosen the six mounting screws that secure the humidifier fill tray rails so that
you can slide the rails out along their mounting slots. Remove the cable clip
that secures the temperature sensor cable underneath the base platform. The
rails must drop down 3/16" (the height of the plastic spacer on the mounting
screw) to slide into the lower back half of the slot. Before repositioning the rails,
the mounting screw heads were above the rail surface, now they are recessed
inside the slot. Do not tighten the rail mounting screws at this point.

12. Install the new back rail by placing it flat against the back inside wall of the base
platform. Attach the back rail, but do nut fully tighten the two back rail mounting
screws yet. Tie wrap the sensor cable to the rail cables (this prevents the cable
from being damage when the fill tray is inserted).

13. Attach the sensor connector strain relief to the two sensor connectors as shown
in Figure A-3.

14. Slide the two side rails all the way back into the pockets in the back rail, and
secure them in position by tightening the remaining four mounting screws. Now
fully tighten the two mounting screws that secure the back rail.

15. Secure the temperature sensor cable with the cable clip and screw on the right
hand side tray rail.

Note: For incubators with continuous mattress tilt, to facilitate installing the
humidifier controller remove the left hand tilt knob assembly. However, do not
remove the knob assembly mounting hinge.

16. Insert the new servo-controlled humidifier fill tray and lid assembly to check that
the connectors on the back rail properly engage the connector on the back of the
tray lid. Now remove the tray and lid assembly to facilitate installing the controller.

17. Connect the green and yellow ground wire from the connector on the back rail
to the grounding stud on the inside bottom rear of the controller housing with the
lock nut provided.

18. Connect the humidity sensor cable wire to J3 on the control/display board.
Connect the heater power wire to J4 on the control/display board. Connect the
microswitch and heater signal wire to J5 on the control/display board.

19. Attach the controller to the base platform by tightening the two mounting bolts at
the bottom of the controller housing. Be careful not to over tighten the mounting
bolts, since this may damage the power switch. Route all cables through the cut-out
in the back of the controller so that they are not pinched between the incubator and
the controller housing.

20. Insert the servo-controlled humidifier fill tray and lid assembly.

21. Re-mount the incubator to the table top using the four mounting knobs removed
earlier.

22. Connect the humidifier power cord and secure it to rear left corner of the base with
the mounting screw and strain relief clip provided (see Figure A-4).

23. Re-attach the tilt knob assembly, if applicable.

24. Perform the check-out procedure in section 3 and the electrical safety test in
section 6.
