 DOCTRINA CHRISTIANA
By: Fray Juan de Plasencia

The Doctrina Christiana was an early book of Roman Catholic

catechism, written in 1593 by Fray Juan de Plasencia, and is believed to be
one of the earliest books printed in the Philippines. The title literally means
“Christian Doctrine”, and thus the primary goal of the book was to propagate
Christian teaching across the Philippine archipelago.

 NUESTRA SENORA DEL ROSARIO

By: Fr. Blancas de San Jose

The second book printed in the Philippines was written by Fr. Blancas
de San Jose in 1602, and printed at the UST Printing Press with the help of
Juan de Vera, a Chinese mestizo. It contains the biographies of saints,
novenas, and questions and answers on religion.

 ANG BARLAAN AT JOSAPHAT

By: Fr. Antonio de Borja

This is a Biblical story printed in the Philippines and translated to

Tagalog from Greek by Fr. Antonio de Borja. It is believed to be the first
Tagalog novel published in the Philippines even if it is only a translation. The
printed translation has only 556 pages. The Ilocano translation in poetry was
done by Fr. Agustin Mejia.
 ANG MGA DALIT KAY MARIA (PSALMS FOR MARY)
By: Mariano Sevilla
A collection of songs praising the Virgin Mary. Fr. Mariano Sevilla, a
Filipino priest, wrote this in 1865 and it was popular especially during the
Maytime “Flores de Mayo” festival.

 URBANA AT FELIZA
By: Modesto de Castro
This is a book by Modesto de Castro, the so called Father of Classic
Prose in Tagalog. These are letters between two sisters Urbana at Felisa and
have influenced greatly the behavior of people in society because the letters
dealt with good behavior.

Additional Activity
1. What values in the story can you apply as a daughter/son? As a
student? As a future professional?

In Urbana at Felisa, it practices good behavior that I may apply as a

daughter, as a student and also as a future professional. It’s easy to adopt
into your environment when you know how to act according to your culture.
Good behavior creates better relationship with others and also makes
respectable impression.

2. From among the characters, who can relate most? Why?

I can relate to Urbana because I’m also an eldest sister. My siblings

are also seeking for my advices or opinion whenever they need it.

3. If you are given the chance to end the story, how you end it?
Why?
If I would be having the chance to end the story, I would probably like
Feliza to write a letter and tell Urbana that their father was ill. For Urbana be
able to go home and see her father before he died. Because knowing your
family member died without seeing them or without doing anything is very
depressing.
