1 Introduction
1.1 Overview
Each cow is fitted with a smart collar, which monitors its heat expression and health
round-the-clock and transmits the data wirelessly to your PC, laptop, mobile or tablet. Our
sophisticated software lets you track each individual cow onscreen in real time — and
alerts you to any changes associated with the onset of heat and/or the health of the
animal. You’ll be sent an email immediately to ensure no vital opportunities are missed.
There’s no impact on your working routine, so things can carry on exactly as normal.
Additionally, the system still works even if you don’t have an internet connection.
Similar to our Silent Herdsman system, mySilent Herdsman lets you keep an eye on your
herd around the clock. The difference is that it is cloud-based — which means the data is
available via the internet, rather than just on the computer in your home, office or parlor.
So wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, you can receive heat detection and
health data, helping you to make relevant decisions quickly and easily.
Health and Heat Alert
The mySilent Herdsman Health Alert service provides early identification of animal illness
before being observed or identified by a farmer, staff member or vet, and builds on
research carried out during a three year program supported by Innovate UK. The 24x7
software-service continually monitors eating and rumination via a single collar-based
sensor. The sensor also identifies heats (estrus).
The graphs display the average time spent by the cow eating and ruminating. Alerts are
received when eating or ruminating declines for an individual animal. Users are able to
adjust the sensitivity setting for the health alert via the Silent Herdsman system.
As with heat detection, alerts can be received via any Smartphone, tablet, laptop or PC
and by accessing the Silent Herdsman or mySilent Herdsman software.
It has been proven to accurately and reliably alert farms to the signs of illness, most
commonly to the early onset of acidosis, ketosis, mastitis/Ecoli mastitis and lameness.
Simply put, Silent Herdsman will help you make more money, save time and keep your
herd healthy – by monitoring your herd wherever you are.

Collars are placed on the cow necks. The sensor on the collar holds the unique ID of each
cow’s activity, rumination and eating information. The collected data is stored on the
collars for up to 7 days when out of range. The reader communicates with the collars via a
proprietary RF protocol at a frequency of 2.4GHz, to send this data periodically to the
Omni-directional antenna located on the Reader device. The Reader collects the data from
the cows’ collars which are within its receiving range.
Reader-to-Collar
reception range
The Afimilk Silent Herdsman software, located on the Controller, uses the collected data of
each cow to calculate: health conditions, exact timing when the cow is in estrus and the
best time for breeding. The application generates reports and alerts the farmer.
In addition to the above, the system may be connected to the internet (recommended).
This allows viewing and managing the system remotely, via the cloud, rather than directly
through the controller. Internet-remote connection links (AP, CR) can be provided with the
system, to allow managing internet distance-related issues.
Number of readers
The default system may include up to 2 readers. Additional readers require special setup.
Internet proximity needs: distance between Controller and internet source
• For close proximity between the controller and the local internet Physical
connection: a simple wire connection is used, connecting the controller to the
router.
• For close proximity between the controller and a Wireless network with internet:
a CR (Client Router) antenna is connected (by a cable) to the controller and is set
to the local internet credentials, to enable internet reception.
• For a distant physical internet, located far from the controller e.g. in the farmer’s
home): an AP (Access Point) antenna is connected to the farm’s internet router,
and the twin CR antenna is connected (by a cable) to the controller, to enable
internet reception.

The shortest distance between buildings may not always be the best option!
• The Reader should have a line of sight towards the cow collars, with minimal
interference from other sheds/poles/buildings or other items that could interfere
with the radio signal.
The antenna used is Omni-directional. Thus, the read range in one direction
may be limited by proximity to obstacles, while in other directions there
may be ideal conditions for transmission.
• no walls interfere with the line of sight towards the collars in the covered area
• If there are walls – they must be made of wood/plastic with wide regular
openings
• Ensure the reader antenna has a direct, un-obstructed line of sight with the area
where the target animals will be in range for at least 20 minutes a day.
• Protection from animals: The positioning point must be out of the reach of all cows.
• Protection from transportation Ensure that farm vehicles are not at risk of hitting the
antenna or reader.
• Internet (Wi-Fi) connection: If internet is used (recommended), the Controller should
have Wireless / Cabled connectivity to the Access Point / office
• Power access: The reader mounting pole has near access to a power outlet (to be
provided by the farmer).

Wireless Cabled
Take the bridge/reader network cable (PoE LAN CABLE (CAT 5E)) and route it between the
Controller position and the bridge/reader designated mounting position (e.g. on the roof).
This cable is connected to the controller on one side, and the other side is connected
according to the specific layout, and should be routed accordingly:
• For a cabled reader: the cable will be connected directly to the reader. Route the cable
to the reader mounting position.
• For a wireless reader: the cable will be connected to the wireless bridge antenna part
that is close to the Controller via the active to passive PoE adapter. Route the cable to
the wireless bridge antenna mounting position.
For a cabled reader, this phase is performed at the same site as the controller
installation. This section explains how to mount a wireless reader.
2. Connect the Omni-directional antenna to the reader: assemble the antenna elements;
then connect it to the reader.
