GEH1032 Modern Technology in Medicine and Healthcare

Semester 2 2020-21
Final Assignment [25%]
This final assignment makes up one quarter of the final grade, so please treat this assignment seriously.
The aim of this assignment is for you to learn. You will learn new concepts that revolve around
medical technology and the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This assignment is designed to be
difficult; you will encounter difficult concepts and medical/technical terms. It will push you to gain
insight into the actual depth, difficulty and complexity that is involved in the real-world applications
of the medical technology, the diseases and their diagnoses and treatment. After learning and
understanding these new concepts, you are to then explain and describe them in a basic, concise
manner. This assignment will be challenging, regardless of your background.
Report submission must be done electronically in pdf format online via Luminus submission folder.
Each report will be assessed by Turnitin to ensure that there is no plagiarism. Late submissions will
be heavily penalized at 20% reduction of the total assignment marks per day.

Submission deadline: 11:59pm on 25 April 2020 (Sunday)

Instructions
• You are to use online search engines as well as online resources (e.g. e-resources and e-textbooks
on NUS digital library) in order to conduct in-depth research into your given topic.
• The substance, depth and the level of details of the content of your report should go beyond the
materials that are covered in the lectures and the lecture notes. Although part 1 of the assignment
requires you to cover content that is taught within the lectures, the focus of your report should
be on content and materials that are beyond the scope of this course, based on your understanding
of the content from online findings. This is especially so for part 2 of the assignment.
• Space in your report is extremely limited; this assignment requires you to work within constraints
of page space. There is certainly far too little space to do justice to your topics. You will have to
decide which aspects are the most important and relevant to be included in your report.
• Your report should contain schematics and figures to further illustrate your point, with proper
references provided. These figures and schematics should have a reasonable size and have text
wrapped around them. The figures and schematics should be considered as supporting material
and they do not replace clear and concise explanations, descriptions and elaborations.
• All the terms that you are to work on in part 2 of this assignment are technically difficult
and will involve advanced concepts and technology, as well as relatively complex medical
procedures and treatment. Your task is to (a) use the online resources and search engines to
locate relevant material, (b) learn and understand the new content and concepts, and then (c)
explain them from scratch. Your explanations should be pitched at a level that your
classmates in GEH1032 may understand.
• Your explanation and description should not be written using medical or technical jargon that
only medical doctors or medical physicists can understand. Medical or technical terms that are
not covered in the lectures are to be explained clearly from scratch. You will need to learn
and understand the difficult terms and concepts, after which you will describe and explain each
of these in basic terms from scratch, according to your own understanding of them.
1
• Your writing should be concise, and dense with information. Proper academic writing should be
adopted and do avoid all forms of colloquialism. Your report should contain a wealth of
details. There should also be sufficient depth to your explanations and discussions.
• You are to demonstrate to me that you have understood the concepts. The report should be
written in your own words. Students who conduct wholesale plagiarism will be heavily penalized.
• For all content from online findings, you are to include them as references in your report. These
references that you use should not purely consist of Wikipedia pages. Wikipedia sources should
take up no more than 20% of all the references that you use.
• You are to address every point of every part of the assignment task. There are 2 parts to each
question; each part has its individual page limit that is indicated on the question itself. These
individual page limits must be strictly followed.
• This assignment is an individual effort, every student must submit their individual report.
