active and engaged individuals

are those who can navigate evaluate and

generate creative solutions to present

day issues that affect all of us

digital literacy can help students in

high school and college

to engage deeply in personal growth and

civic engagement

in particular digital citizenship refers

to the responsible and appropriate

use of technology in digital spaces

teaching digital literacy and

citizenship is now mandated in many

revised national and global educational

standards

the iste student standards and aacu

value rubrics for example

require students to be knowledgeable

about copyright law online ethics

identity privacy and security

digital literacy also promotes personal

and professional growth across many

contexts

from school to workplace to being an

active member of your community

for example a student who built a

digital portfolio in her first year

writing class

then created digital content for a

community service organization

and finally leveraged these creations to

successfully apply for internships and

jobs

let's hear from education leaders and

students who have used creative cloud to

benefit themselves

their communities and the world digital

literacy is important

outside of our educational lives as well

because our whole identity is tied up in

the digital right now the way that we

interact with others the way that we

socialize the way that

we inhabit the world is very digital

right now we have the photos that we

take on instagram and

the sort of persona that we create

through those images

or the video that we take of our

newborn that we send to our mother so

that she can see this baby

or the voice messages that we leave

to our person we love to either

tell them we love them or break up with

them one should do that in person

but you know the digital is everywhere

and the better

we understand the digital the richer our

lives will be

throughout my education i had various

interests

for example in college i was a music

major as well as an english major

and while i theoretically knew that

those two disciplines

overlapped somewhat my assignments never

showed that overlap i was never able to

meld those two interests together

and it wasn't until i discovered digital

rhetoric or digital literacy

then i found out that i can express

myself through various modes

so i i could i didn't have to erase my

music side i didn't have to erase my

english side but i could integrate them

together

and create video essays or podcast

episodes

and it completely changed everything for

me what i realized is that when you are

producing in those media

you have to go out into the world you

have to shoot things you have to

interact with people

and i think as a result of that

experience that exploring that i had to

do

that these media required me to do i

started to engage with the material the

content of my work on a deeper level

and that led to me caring a lot more and

even though i was very passionate about

my work before

i think having just putting faces to

names and

seeing the world at very in various

angles

and trying to capture things in a

creative way

changed changed me profoundly i have a

strong interest in social movements and

social innovation

and helping others what i think would

really be great is finding a way of

inspiring others through digital media

because i think digital rhetoric right

now plays a lot into how people form

their public perceptions of different

issues

and i think the creative cloud has

allowed me to explore that interest a

little more

we just started offering a class it's a

300 level class

it's called introduction to adobe

creative cloud and i want to read you a

quote from the description because

i think this hits head on why our

relationship is so important

it ends as writing has gone digital it

has also gone

multimodal to write in the 21st century

is to compose with words images and

sounds

and i think that's exactly what adobe

software does for our students

part of what we haven't talked about to

the degree that we need to talk about

is that a big component of digital

literacy is what we might call

circulation

that it goes beyond the idea of writing

say an

essay in which the entire circulation is

from student to teacher

now with the digital literacy we're

talking very specifically

about taking those artifacts whether

they're student driven civic driven

politically driven

and putting them out in public i mean

let's not forget that one of the key

important moments in the development of

spark was that little button that says

share and one of the prime examples i

can give about this and something i'm

proud of

was i had an undergraduate student who

was from haiti

and we were using premier pro to talk

about documentary development

and to talk about how can we make our

stories circulate

and at that moment in that semester was

when the big hurricane hit

haiti and her home basically was

destroyed

and so she left class for several weeks

and went home to help she took her video

camera with her

and she shot video of everything she saw

while she was there

she came back to class and for her final

project she made a video that was a

local's view

of what was really going on in haiti and

she posted it to her youtube channel and

within a couple of days

unsolicited she started getting

donations

sent to her from across the country

digital literacies are essential in our

highly mediated world that includes

numerous avenues of cultural production

and participation our world requires

that we produce students with multiple

digital literacy so that they can safely

and ethically navigate new

professional political or cultural

environments once they've left school

or while they're in school these

literacies are the new ones that make

students stand apart in the job

application pool

traditional writing and speaking skills

are not enough to be successful

students need to be able to show that

they understand basic graphic design

video editing digital meeting

participation and facilitation

and project management who wouldn't stop

and watch the video someone embedded in

their pdf resume that demonstrated these

skills

digital literacy is extremely important

outside of education because we all find

ourselves in this fast-paced society

whether we like it or not right so if we

strategically explore

and add more written and visual

communication to our toolset

then we're able to find ourselves

smartly positioned

to tackle just about any communication

challenge and on multiple platforms
