Karl Benz

(The creator of the first automobile)

Karl Benz was born on 25 November 1844 in Pfaffenrot Germany. The son of Josephine Vaillant
and Johann Goerg Benz.

When he was two years old his father died but his mother always gave him a good education. Karl
Benz was a prodigious student. When he was only nine years old he started his studies at the
scientifically oriented Lyceum and the Poly-Techical University.

At the age of 15, he starTed to study at the University of Karlsruhe where he studied Mechanical
engineering. After his university studies, he worked in several companies as a mechanical
engineering.

On 1842 Benz married TO????and had 5 children. He and his wife gOt a factory where he began to
work in the creation on a petrol two-stroke engine. After that he patented the ignition using
sparks with battery, the carburetor, the clutch, the water radiator and others.

The success of his company gave him the opportunity to design a horseless carriage. He used the
same technology to create an automobile, this new creation was fuelED by gas. In 1885 he
created the first automobile, Benz named it “Benz Patent Motorwagen”. But this automobile was
difficult to control and had a collision in a public demonstration. He did two versions of the
Motorwagen.

In 1888 he made the version of two gears. And thanks TO a suggestion of his wife he added the
third gear.
