The Importance of Assessment
Whereas some assessments include questions that have correct answers and test the learner’s
knowledge of facts and procedures (e.g. true vs. false questions, multiple choice questions,
etc.),
other types of assessments imply and expect a range of different responses rewarding
academic
skills such as analysis, critique and evaluation (e.g. written assignments, essays, oral
presentations,
etc.). No matter which assessment type is preferred, and even when different assessment
methods
are combined, assessment is always embedded in the learning process and is tightly
interconnected with curriculum and instruction.
Teachers and students work towards the achievement of curriculum outcomes, and assessment
does not only consist in checking students’ progress and achievement, it is also part of informing
instruction and plays a constant role in guiding the student's next steps.
