LAURO
LIFE AND WORKS OF RIZAL

The vivacious history of Philippines tells us that Filipinos possess the sense of
nationalism. Looking back on how Rizal fought for the country with diplomatic fighting
style, it is sensible that people before showed patriotism. Consequently, the Republic Act
1425 or Rizal law was implemented for re-dedication to the ideals of freedom and
nationalism for today’s younger generation. Firstly, it was stated in the section 3 of the
law that in the collegiate courses, the original or unexpurgated editions of the Noli Me
Tangere and El Filibusterismo or their English translation shall be used as basic texts.
But it clearly contradicts to the objectives of the Rizal law being covered. Second thing is
copies of Rizal’s works are said to be free of charge but would it guarantee that Purok
organizations and Barrio councils do the responsibility? Lastly, a sum of three hundred
thousand is authorized for carrying out the purpose of the Act but how can educational
institutions maximized the mentioned budget ensuring the admittance of it by its
beneficiaries.
One of the objectives of Rizal law is to rededicate the lives of the youth to ideals
of freedom and nationalism. It basically includes the application of Rizal’s doings that was
written in his works such as novels. It involves also the use of our own national language
and therefore the law must recognize it instead of translating it into an English language.
It is evident that some of the politicians nowadays after being put into their positions
has turned blind to their obligations. Some are tempted to do immoral actions for the sake
of monetary compensation. That is why even if copies of Rizal’s works are free there is a
possibility that those materials wouldn’t be delivered to people who wishes to read it.
Another thing is that the location could be a hindrance especially if an interested person’s
residence is belong to a remote control area.
In the section 5 of the RA 1425, it was enunciated that there was a sum of three
hundred thousand allocated for the said act. The question is how we can be certain that
the amount will be allotted for carrying the act alone and not to be used for other
tenacities. Is there a list of educational institutions who already received the amount for
such realization of purpose? If there is already a budget for the distribution of the copies
of the Rizal’s works then why there are still students who have to pay for the acquisition
of such books?
All at once, the Rizal law aims for Filipinos to be nationalistic citizen. It is by means
of loving our country dearly and patronizing what is ours rather than practicing the obverse
of it. With the present technological advancement, it is a good paradigm to produce copies
in a digital method. In that way easier access with Rizal’s works can be done especially
with the generation nowadays living in a globally digital world.
