Analysis of Cubic Crystal

Ques 1. In a simple cubic cell, each point on a corner is shared by

(1) 2 unit cells
(2) 1 unit cell
(3) 8 unit cells
(4) 4 unit cells

Ques 2. In a face centred cubic cell, an atom at the face contributes to the unit cell
(1) 1 part
(2) 1/2 part
(3) 1/4 part
(4) 1/8 part

Ques 3. A compound is formed by elements A and B. This crystallises in the cubic structure
when atoms A are at the corners of the cube and atoms B are at the centre of the
body. The simplest formula of the compound is
(1) AB
(2) AB2
(3) A2 B
(4) AB4

Ques 4. First three nearest neighbour distance for primitive cubic unit cell will be: (edge
length of unit cell = l)
√ √
√ 2`,
(a) `, √ 3`
(b) √ 3`, 2`, `
(c) `, √2`, 2`
(d) `, 2`, `

Ques 5. The length of the unit cell edge of a bcc lattice metal is 350pm. Thus, volume of
atoms in one mole of the metal is
(a) 9.21 cm3
(b) 7.25 cm3
(c) 1.21 cm3
(d) 4.00 cm3
Ques 6. In a face centered lattice of X and Y, X atoms are present at the corners while Y
atoms are at face centers. Then the formula of the compound would be if one of the
X atoms is missing from a corner in each unit cell
(a) X7 Y24
(b) X24 Y7
(c) XY24
(d) X24 Y

Ques 7. How many ’nearest’ and ’next nearest’ neighbours respectively potassium have in bcc
lattice?
(a) 8,8
(b) 8,6
(c) 6,8
(d) 8,2

Ques 8. First three nearest neighbour distances for body centered cubic lattice are respectively
√ √
(a) 2a, a,√ 3a
(b) √a2 , a, 3a
√ √
(c) √23a , a, 2a

(d) 23a , a, 3a

Solution
4.

(1)→ l √ (First nearest neighbour distance)

(2) → l√2 (Second nearest neighbour distance)
(3) → l 3 (Third nearest neighbour distance)

5. In a bcc structure, the atoms touch each other along the body diagonal.

Radius of the atom = r

AB 2 = BC 2 + AC 2
BC 2 = BD2 + CD2 = a2 + a2 = 2a2
∴ AB 2 =√2a2 + a2 = 3a2
∴ AB = 3a

6. No. of X atom per unit cell = 7 × 18 = 7

8
No. of Y atom per unit cell = 6 × 21 = 3
∴ Formula = X7/8 Y3 or X7 Y24

7. It is a fact for crystal structure (bcc) potassium

3a

8. 2
