College of Forestry, OUAT, Bhubaneswar located centrally in the heart of the temple city of Bhubaneswar, it boasts of a
sprawling campus and spacious infrastructure which are easily accessible (about 5 km away from railway station and about 2.5 km INS
from Biju Pattnaik International Airport). Libra
Forestry education in Orissa University of Agriculture & Technology was introduced in the year 1976 after the Righ
recommendation of National Commission on Agriculture, with inclusion of 3 courses namely (1) Silviculture (2) Forest Products and Pub

(3) Forest Conservation in the curricula of B. Sc. (Ag.) course. Subsequently, during 1987 after the recommendation of National OUA
Circ
Forest Policy-1986, a four year B. Sc (Forestry), an undergraduate course was introduced in the country as well as in OUAT.

The college offers Graduate and Post graduate degree programmes. The B.Sc.(Hons.) Forestry is a four year professional OUA
degree course with course work, Forest Work Experience (FoWE) and Experimental learning (ELP) Programme, with an intake Res

Thereafter, OUAT had upgraded the Department of Forestry to College of Forestry with opening of 5 constituent departments Rec

Admissions are carried out strictly as per the norms of the University, wherein performance in the OUAT entrance examination
and marks secured in last qualifying examination are taken into account. The duration of the undergraduate programme is 4 years and
that of the post graduate programme is 2 years, both following the semester system. The course curriculum of B.Sc (Hons.) Forestry &
M.Sc. (Forestry) programme are designed as per ICAR recommendations. The college campus has adequate fully-furnished
classrooms, well-equipped and updated laboratories, a common room, auditorium, examination hall, computer labs with Wi- Fi
internet extending throughout.

About Department : Department of Silviculture and Agroforestry


Department of Silviculture and Agroforestry started in the year 2010 with an aim to offer the courses of B.Sc. Forestry Program as
per ICAR syllabus and to provide Post graduate program in M.Sc. Forestry (Silviculture and Agroforestry). Silviculture and
Agroforestry (SAF) department is a very important department of faculty of Forestry. It deals production, management and
inventory aspects of various naturally as well as artificially regenerated forest crops including different agroforestry practices. This
department involves in teaching, research and extension activities on these aspects. It offers courses to students of College of
Forestry as well as College of Agriculture-Bhubaneswar, College of Agriculture-Bhawanipatna, College of Agriculture – Chiplima
and College of Horticulture – Chiplima campus of university. It gives technical support to farmers, entrepreneurs and forest based
industries on farm forestry and agroforestry aspects. It imparts training, research and inventory activities for the state forest
department. It also undertakes the 3rd party evaluation of government plantations for CAG and state forest department. It has about
20 acres of pure instructional plantations of commercial species and 2 acres of commercial agroforestry plantations in main campus
of university.
Research
The faculty and PG students carryout various research works on nursery technique of important tree species, natural regeneration of
forests, assessment of productivity of forest crops, farm forestry, agroforestry, forest ecology, etc.

Department:
Department of Forest Products and Utilisation started in the year 2010 with an aim to offer the courses of
B.Sc. Forestry Program as per ICAR syllabus and to provide Post graduate program in M.Sc. Forestry
(Forest Products and Utilisation). Odisha has green wash (Recorded Forest Area) of 61,204 sq km which is
39.31% of its geographical area having well stocked, diverse, multi-storied and dense forest with rich
diversity in Forest Products .As resource assessment, evaluation and utilisation of Forest products are
essential for their sustainable use , the department take care of the requirement of education, research and
human resource development of this field with the following mandates and area of work .

About Department of Forest Biology & Tree Improvement


Department
The Department of Forest Biology and Tree Improvement (FBT)was established in the year 2010 in
College of Forestry under Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology(OUAT).The College of
Forestry came into existence in 2010 upgraded from Department of Forestry which was started in the
year 1987 under College of Agriculture, Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar ,
Odisha. The Department of FBT is offering M.Sc. (Forestry) in Forest Genetic Resources since 2014.
This department looks after the teaching, research and extension activities relating to improvement of forest
resources of the state.
Mandate

i. The Department offers courses for undergraduate and post graduate degrees. It developes
professionals in the field of tree improvement by honing them with teaching and practical
skills.
ii. The Department conducts research programme for increasing the productivity by
development of desired quality of high yielding clones/varieties of tree, shrub and herb
species found in the forest to meet the growing demand of timber, biomass, pulpwood, fodder
and NTFPs etc. The Department also conducts research programme on standardisation of
vegetative propagation methods, seed technology of tree species, physiological basis of
growth and development tree species, forest ecology and biotechnological tools for
improvement of forest resources.
iii. The Department imparts extension programme through training to farmers and government
officials in the field of improvement of forest genetic resources. It is also mandated to provide
high yielding varieties of valuable s trees, shrubs and herbs in the interest of the farmers.

About Department : Department of Natural Resource Management


Department of Natural Resource Management (NRM) started in the year 2010 with an aim to offer the
courses of B.Sc. Forestry Program as per ICAR syllabus and to provide Post Graduate program in M. Sc.
Forestry (Natural Resource Management). Natural resource management refers to sustainable utilization of
land, water, soil, plant and animal resources keeping the quantity and quality at present use and
conservation for future generation. Odisha is endowed with immense rich flora and fauna resource
flourishing in diverse geo-morphological and climatic conditions. During past few decades extreme
metrological events are very frequent and endangering economic and ecological stability of many
ecosystems. Environmental pollution and climate change adding fuel to this process. Assessment of net
ecosystem productivity and carbon foot print in a changing climate will support policy makers and stake
holders for sustainable utilization of natural resources. As an academic institution the department will look
forward towards education, research and human resource development in this regard with the following
mandates and area of work.

About Department of Forest Policy and Law


Department:
Department of Forest Policy and Law started in the year 2014 with an aim to offer the courses of B.Sc.
Forestry Program as per ICAR syllabus and to provide Post graduate program in M.Sc. Forestry (Forest
Policy and Law). Main aim of this department is to provide a general understanding of the economic
systems of forests and purposeful actions or inactions undertaken in order to use of their resources. This
Department apart from providing undergraduate courses for B.Sc. Forestry students offers M.Sc. Forestry
(Forest Business Management) degree with annual enrolment of 6 students. The major areas of postgraduate
researches include following thematic areas to target forest based day to day activities

Mandate:

1. To develop the critical thinking skills with the accumulation of factual knowledge on forests to guarantee
life and furnish their commercial values for the humans.

2. To use macro-economic considerations in order to quantify national roles of forests in terms of capital values
from growing stocks and ensured protection of soil and aquatic productivity.

3. To generate economic development strategies intended to increasingly recognize the capital values
of forests in national policies and programmes that modify forest stocks, qualities and distributions.
4. To foster individual’s critical thinking for the factual knowledge in the field of forestry and allied disciplines in order
to cultivate his decision making skills much effective for the industry of employment or ensure him a magnet.

5. To add economic or social set of data augmenting a tripartite friendship of Public, private and industry in the
field of forestry that will enable value chain for achieving capstone and let the world a better place for
humankind.

Area of Research:

1. Forest, people and local livelihood:

Evaluation of JFM to achieve the ultimate goal of planning, development and


sustainability of bondage between forests and communities studied.
Socioeconomic analysis of forest dependent villages.
Survey and analysis of different ecotourism sites.
Research on economics of different Agroforestry models.

2. Sustainable Ecotourism:

Research includes how to conserve the natural resources and maintain the integrity of
indigenous culture with identifying the Ecotourism markets.

3. Community management of natural resources:


The studies made to detect the strategies like more equitable distribution of wealth,
environment improvement and decentralization of power, cooperation of local people in
conservation endeavors of forests, parks, wildlife, water bodies, etc.

4. Socio-economic evaluation of project:


The project may be a developmental project like mining, hydroelectric, thermal project or a
tree/herbal plantation or agroforestry project.

The studies carried out to assess the Issues addressed for instance, benefit costs, payback period,
for developmental projects studied compensation payment for the land, provision of employment,
and alternative accommodation

Visit to modern forest nurseries, herbal gardens and watersheds, study the felling and logging operations, timber lots and important
industrial products, study working plan, enumeration, volume and yield calculation & compartment history files, study the ‘CAT’
(Catchment Area Treatment Plan) and FDA (Forest Development Agencies). Use of forestry equipments/instruments, Study the
regeneration and management of important forestry tree species, Sample plots, layout studies, stump analysis, preparation of local
volume Tables. Study the working of other Forestry related organizations/industries. At the Wild life Sanctuaries/National Parks/Tiger
Reserves, the students are expected to learn about the aspects related with the preparation of the Management Plans/Conservation
Plans,to undertake and familiarize the various wildlife population enumeration techniques and the biodiversity assessment techniques.
To undertake pilot studies on the man-animal conflict andother issues in the forest areas etc. Hands on training in the handling of
various kinds of weapons and their operation, limitations and precautions during their use. Getting basic know ledge on different first
aid practices which are required in case of field emergencies, like snakebite, animal attack, poachers and accidents. Also to learn about
the first aid to be given to wild animals in distress and volunteering in rural health services
Institutional and Industrial Exposure

Attachment with Forest Based Industries like Wood Workshop, Saw Mills, Wood Seasoning and Preservation Treatment Plants, Pulp
and Paper Industries, Aromatic and Medicinal Plant Units. Carpentry, bamboo and reed crafts, other Wood Products Industries,
rubber, NWFP etc. Works to be undertaken includes study the nature of industrial and business organization–structure, raw material–
collection and processing of raw-material, production and management process, marketing and financial management. Visit to
institutes related to forestry and allied sciences for updating with recent technologies.
Socio Economic Surveys and Village Attachment:

Data collection, use of PRA techniques with respect to village profile including socioeconomic and cultural status, farm technology
used, home steads, agroforestry, biodiversity etc.Bench Mark survey of plant resources (cropping pattern, home steads, agroforestry,
biodiversity,yield system etc.),Schedule development, tabulation, analysis and preparing plan of work. Understanding local forestry
and other village level institutions (Panchayat,Village Forest Committees, corporations, youth/women groups etc.), People’s
participation in developmental programmes with special reference to forestry. Exercises on the use of extension methods and teaching
aids for Transfer of Technology.
Report Writing and Presentation

Compilation of the work/experience detailing the objectives, places and persons visited, work done, experiences/skills gained and
suggestions for improvement of training. Presentation of before faculty. The assessment will be based on Project Report evaluation
and viva-voce.
2. Experimental learning programme:

Experiential Learning (EL) helps the student to develop competence, capability, capacity building, acquiring skills, expertise
and confidence to start their own enterprise and turn “Job Creators instead of Job Seekers”. This is a step towards “Earn while Learn”
concept. It provides the students an excellent opportunity to develop analytical and entrepreneurial skills and knowledge through
meaningful hands on experience. The students will take up any one of the following ELP modules with a credit load of 0+10 credit
hours during the IV and V semester.

1. Established linkage with NALCO Ltd. Damanjodi on red mud reclamation.
2. Established linkage with Forest Department, Govt. of Odisha on biodiversity assessment & conservation strategy.
3. Linkage with IFP, Ranchi, ICFRE.

Research:
A project entitled “Forest fire crises and steps for early Management in Odisha”, completed in 2019 -20, funded by Odisha Forest
Department.
Students research : M Sc (Forestry) students research is going on in 5 Departments.

Student’s placement:

Placement cell has been effectively functioning in the college with the following objectives:
Organise campus interviews for final year students.
Prepare students to face interviews by organizing lectures on personality development & soft skill development.
Motivate students to aspire for higher studies and guiding them to take competitive examination

The advertisement related to job vacancies and higher education are displayed in notice board regularly as well as whatsapp group.
For placement Special coaching classes are arranged for the students appearing for the competitive examination.
Alumnae of this college have been placed in different Government and private sector organization, SAUs, NGOs and higher studies
etc. across the country and abroad.

Every year internal and external study tour arranged for the students.

Participation in Krushi Odisha 2020


College of Forestry won the Champion Title in the cultural programme (group dance) and 1st prize for English Debate in Krushi
Odisha 2020, Govt. of Odisha.

Participation in Agriunifest 2020:


Every year from our college students participating indifferent activities in Agriunifest and getting prizes.

Annual Athlete meet 2020:


College of Forestry acquired the Champion position in the University Annual Athletic Meet 2019-20 held at College of Agriculture,
Bhawanipatna.

International biological diversity:


It was celebrated on 26th April, 2019 at College of Forestry.
Essay competition for International biodiversity day held at College of Forestry.

International Yoga Divas


It was observed on 21st June 2019 in the University play ground.

Vanomohastava Week
Observation of Vanomahotsav Day and Avenue Plantation held at College of Forestry on 06.07.2019.

FAAO:
8th Forestry Alumni Association Organization (FAAO) held on 12.01.2020 at College of Forestry.

National Science Day celebration


It was celebrated on 28.02.2020 at Odisha Bigyan Academy, Bhubaneswar.

Self Employment Awareness Programme:


Students participated in a Self Employment Awareness Programme “Prime Ministers employment generation Programme” on
dt.28.02.2020 at Jaydev Bhawan, Bhubaneswar.

Participation in State level farmers’ Fair at OUAT

The college participated in the state level Farmers Fair in OUAT on 7.3. 2020. Different products developed under Experiential
Learning Programme(ELP) , other forest produces and different value added byproducts were displayed in the exhibition. The
programme was graced by Dr.Arun kumar Sahu, Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Empowerment, Animal Husbandry &
Fisheries, Govt. of Odisha & Dr.P.K.Agrawal,Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, OUAT.
