1. INTRODUCTION
Pack cementation processes have been used for many years to
produce oxidation or wear resistant layers on the surface of metals
and alloys. The pack "ca1orizing" of steel was a commercial process
fifty or more years ago (1), and it is interesting that after years
of intensive study of coating methods, in more recent times pack
aluminization emerged as a predominant method of coating aircraft
gas turbine blades (2). While AI, Cr and Si are the metals most
commonly deposited by pack processes, because of its technological
simplicity the method has also been considered for the deposition
of many other metals or semimetals (3).

The reason for assuming that the Hz'SiC1 4 pressure ratio = 0.5 was
not explained. If all of the. hydrogen and chlorine from the activator
were retained in the pack, a higher ratio lIIight be expected. In any
event, as shown in Fig. l~ below about 1500 K SiHCl is the predom-
inant spe.cies in the gas phase, while above 1500 K SiC1 2 predominates.
No condensed phase. occurs and pressures depend upon the amount of
actiya.tor retained in the. pack. Walsh's (13) analysis of an NH F-
activa.ted alull)ino-siliconizing pack likewise indicates that at iower
