1.0. Integrated solid waste management: ISWM is a sustainable approach towards solid waste
management which deals with all the aspects from generation, sorting to collection and treatment.
ISWM emphasis on efficient resources.
1.1. ISWM coverage
ISWM covers following aspects of management :
 Geographical and administrative boundaries
 Jurisdiction (municipal, industrial) limits
 Institutions involved and administrative mandate
 Sectors and sub-sectors: (residential ,
 commercial, industrial, urban agriculture,
 healthcare, construction debris, and sludge)
 Waste streams (hazardous and non-hazardous)
 Recyclable and non-recyclable waste

It is a whole package that includes all the managemental systems like technology, communities and
voluntary measures.

2.0. Difference between SWM and ISWM


I would say Solid waste management is a conventional approach while ISWM is a modern approach
